Overview
Successful completion of this new MSc Adult Nursing blended learning course enables graduates from a range of backgrounds to enter the nursing profession in just two years.
The course is comprised of 50% clinical placement and 50% academic learning. The blend of 95% online and 5% face-to- face academic learning aims to provide you with the flexibility to study from any location for the majority of the course. The 50% placement time will include 20% in a simulated learning environment which is also designed to allow you to undertake this from any location (subject to a suitable Wi-Fi/Internet connection).
The MSc Adult Nursing blended learning course is a two-year programme designed to respond to the current challenges in healthcare and the complex healthcare environment where advancing technologies, contemporary research and new knowledge influences and impacts on nursing practice. The course is aimed at individuals with a prior undergraduate degree and evidence of experience in health and social care. Previous undergraduate degrees may include (but are not limited to) health-related disciplines, psychology, criminology or sociology degrees.
Those with non-health-related degrees must demonstrate extensive experience in the clinical health and social care sector. It is also suitable for existing nurses looking for dual qualification. The face to face skills and practical teaching elements will be delivered from either Coventry, Scarborough or London campuses. We will try to accommodate your preferred choice, subject to availability.
Coventry University has extensive experience of on-line learning, utilising simulation and virtual reality with the aim to enhance teaching and learning. Clinical placements are integral to the MSc Adult Nursing, accounting for 50% of the course.* This includes clinical practice in a healthcare setting (organised by the university) and practice learning with local practice partners. You will be expected to complete placements across four practice modules in a range of areas relevant to the disciplines of Adult Nursing such as emergency, high dependency care, community and home care delivery settings and medical/surgery acute hospital experiences. Practice assessment is divided into three parts which is designed to explore the proficiencies required to become an autonomous nurse practitioner. There will be opportunities for 20% of simulated digital experience as part of the clinical placements. This will be an online, cutting edge simulated experience where you will be fully supervised and designed so that you can work safely both individually and in small groups, with the chance to explore and assess and interventions in ‘near to real life’ clinical scenarios. The hands on elements of the clinical placements may be delivered in one of the following regions of England: Midlands, North East & Yorkshire, London, Bedfordshire/Hertfordshire, and East of England.
Upon successful completion, in addition to eligibility for NMC registration (application and additional costs apply), you will also graduate with a Chartered Management Institute (CMI) accredited qualification in Global Professional Development in Coaching and Mentoring, if that module is successfully completed, and you will have the opportunity to apply to become a member of the CMI. Nursing and Midwifery Council
The course is fully accredited by the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and on successful completion you will be eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Chartered Management Institute (CMI)
The course currently includes the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) accredited module, Global Professional Development in Coaching and Mentoring - Students who successfully complete the CMI module and meet the CMI evidence requirements will also gain a Level 7 Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring.
Coventry University’s accreditation with CMI is currently ongoing for the relevant modules, but is frequently reviewed and monitored by the CMI through their quality systems. If any changes occur with respect to our accreditation related to these modules, we will seek to notify applicants and students as soon as possible.
Your learning is designed to be enhanced by the involvement of practitioners, service users and carers in programme development and delivery. In partnership with practice and academic assessors, all students should be exposed to a variety of placements across community, acute and independent sectors.
As the pre-registration, blended learning MSc in Adult Nursing is a two-year course, there is a requirement to complete 460 practice hours through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process to meet the NMC standard of nursing education of 2300 practice hours. The RPL process will credit students for 460 hours to meet the stated NMC criteria. Applicants will be supported in the RPL process.

The MSc Adult Nursing blended learning course aims to develop your skills and knowledge for the Adult Nursing field, related to the complex care issues around the mental, physical, cognitive and behavioural impairment and other co-morbidities with which patients present in the healthcare environment.
The programme aims to help you develop the knowledge, expertise and evidence-informed practice required to meet the needs of the patients’ lived experience, which embodies today's nursing and healthcare practices. It also gives you the opportunity to develop your digital skills so that you are fully equipped to work in the growing, technology based health care sector.

This blended learning course can be studied full-time. It offers start dates in January, May & September.
A range of teaching and learning methods are employed in the MSc Adult Nursing bended learning programme, including lectures, clinical simulation, seminars, workshops, tutorials, practical clinical work in a practice setting and work-based learning. The teaching and learning activities are intended to engage you with the relevant theory and to facilitate understanding of the module content, to question and formulate ideas and perspectives on the subject material.
You will have support in preparation for the assessments from a variety of sources. These could include your module leaders or a subject specialist in the library resources on the course-web platforms. Furthermore, students will also have support from practice educators in the clinical placement areas which are an integral part of this programme of study. Please note that staff and the online platform is subject to change.
In addition to the teaching and learning methods, a key learning feature of the MSc Adult Nursing blended learning is independent study. This means you will have the opportunity to take the initiative and responsibility for working through the learning material and make decisions on how to collate, manage and present the information for their assessment. You are therefore expected to have the ability to make informed choices about the materials used for study, and encouraged to be proactive and self-motivated in your learning.
All assessment methods are aligned to the MSc Adult Nursing blended learning programme objectives, and the learning outcomes of each module are designed to reflect the programme objective. The theory modules include a range of different assessment methods, such as critical appraisal essays, presentations, viva-voce (oral test), reports, practice assessment and the service improvement dissertation.
A Practice Assessment Document (MYEPAD) and Personal Development Portfolio (PDP) is designed to enable you to provide evidence for the acquisition of the core clinical nursing skills and field-specific skills.
On successful completion, you will be eligible to apply for registration as an Adult Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) to practice as a registered professional in nursing (subject to additional costs).
This is a full-time course and you are expected to attend teaching online for a minimum of two and a half days each week during term time. You will be required to attend face-to-face practical and skills based teaching sessions for a total of ten days over the two years.
There are four practice modules which equate to six placements throughout the two-year course; these modules are mandatory, and attendance is a necessity to meet the practice hours requirement for NMC registration.
As an innovative and enterprising institution, the University may seek to utilise emerging technologies within the student experience. For all courses (whether on-campus, blended, or distance learning), the university may deliver certain contact hours and assessments via online technologies and methods. The contact hours may be made up of a combination of face-to-face teaching, individual and group tutorials, and online classes and tutorials.
You must pass all modules to meet the eligibility requirement for professional registration with the NMC.
Entry Requirements
Tuition Fees
We pride ourselves on offering competitive tuition fees which we review on an annual basis and offer a wide range of scholarships to support students with their studies. Course fees are calculated on the basis of what it costs to teach each course and we aim for total financial transparency.
Eligible UK and EU students on this course may be entitled to apply for a minimum £5,000 payment from the NHS Learning Support Fund (NLS Fund).
EU student fees
EU nationals starting in the 2020/21 academic year remain eligible for the same fees as home students and the same financial support. Financial support comes from Student Finance England, and covers undergraduate and postgraduate study for the duration of their course, providing they meet the residency requirement.
For tuition fee loans:
EU nationals starting in the 2020/21 academic year must have resided in the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland for the three years prior to the start of their course. The purpose of that three year residency should not have been mainly for the purpose of receiving full time education.
For maintenance loans:
EU nationals starting in the 2020/21 academic year must have resided in the UK and Islands for the five years prior to the start of their course. The purpose of that five year residency should not have been mainly for the purpose of receiving full time education.
Career prospects
Graduate Immigration Route visa
Based on current information from the UK Government, international students whose study extends beyond summer 2021 may be eligible for a visa under the UK Government’s Graduate Immigration Route, which will enable students to stay and work, or look for work, in the UK at any skill level for up to two (2) years. Check the most up to date guidance available to check your eligibility and any updates from the UK Government before making an application or enrolment decision.
Successful completion of the course is a strong indication to potential employees that you have both the ability and the academic characteristics required for working in a variety of clinical Adult Nursing settings.
The programme is developed to position you, upon successful completion, for an accelerated career pathway to potentially become a future nursing leader, clinical expert, educator or researcher within the profession.
Where our graduates work
For nursing provision there is a national shortage of nurses and so employment prospects for graduates are good, in a variety of clinical/specialist areas in a range of public and private healthcare settings. It may be possible to use your qualification to work overseas, which would be subject to competitive application, availability, meeting any applicable visa requirements and additional costs may apply.
