Overview

This part-time course is designed for those who wish to pursue their career and interests in leadership and management. Focused and pragmatic, the PgCert, PgDip and MA are all designed to offer a variety of support and are targeted at managers at all stages of their career.

The course aims to develop both the intellectual frameworks and practical skills managers and leaders need to operate in dynamic and complex work environments. In doing so, it aims to build an understanding of the nature of organizations and the external context within which leaders and managers operate.

The full programme is completed over two years. However experienced managers or those with previous qualifications may also be eligible to complete the course over a shorter period. If studied to MA level, this course features a module accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI)* entitled Global Professional Development – Coaching and Mentoring. Students who successfully complete the CMI module and meet the CMI evidence requirements will also gain a Level 7 Certificate in Strategic Leadership and Management and a Level 7 Award in Professional Consulting. This will enable you to apply for Chartered Manager status via the qualified route, once all CMI entry criteria have been met (please visit the CMI website for full details on the criteria to qualify as a Chartered Manager and applicable fees).

Coventry University’s accreditation with CMI is currently ongoing for the relevant modules, but is frequently reviewed and monitored by the CMI through their quality systems. Course information

This part-time course has been designed for those who wish to pursue their career and research interests in leadership and management. The course is designed with the professional leader in mind and assessments generally focus on strategic workplace issues. Students may also choose to graduate after successfully completing two semesters of study (PgCert) or four semesters of study (PgDip) however the MA, studied over a total of six semesters, forms the apex of our suite of leadership and management programmes.

All modules on the course are mandatory, and cover topics such as the theory behind leadership and management, how to lead and manage strategically, and the personal skills required to become an effective and dynamic leader.

Overview

During Year One, which is made up of 3 semesters, you will have the opportunity to complete the PgCert qualification, and, upon successful completion, commence your studies towards the PgDip through the module Strategic Leadership and Management.

In the first three semesters of study you will have the opportunity to develop your understanding of seminal and contemporary leadership and management theories ideas, and explore how to understand and develop your effectiveness as a leader further. You will also explore why leadership and management is so critical to organisational effectiveness. All modules listed are mandatory.

Overview

In Year Two, again comprised of 3 semesters, you will have the opportunity to complete your studies towards the PgDip, by undertaking the module Leadership and Management of Communication, Culture and Change. This will include exploring the key issues of culture, communication and change. You will also have the opportunity to undertake a Collaborative Online Learning Project, studying alongside leaders enrolled on a similar course at a partner institution overseas.

You will then have the chance to complete the final stages of the MA programme, upon successful completion of the PgDip. Firstly, you will look at developing your appreciation of how leaders build capacity in others through coaching and mentoring. Your studies will then be completed through the completion of an extended business project, during which you explore a specific leadership and management issue of your choice, to showcase the application of your learning from the course.

During the MA section of the programme, you will also study a module accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) entitled Global Professional Development – Coaching and Mentoring. Learning is designed to fit around the demands of working life, with teaching typically occurring over five Fridays per semester, with additional support online. As part of the MA course, you will be expected to study part-time for 6 semesters over two years, while for the PgDip you will be expected to study part-time for 4 semester over two years, and for the PgCert study part-time for 2 semesters over one year. The programme is run on an accelerated basis and upon successful completion the full Masters qualification can be achieved over two years. Furthermore, experienced managers and those with previous experience may be able to join at a later stage. Dedicated supervisory support is also offered to students completing their dissertation in the final year of the programme.

This course will be assessed using a variety of methods, including work-based projects, individual and group presentations, and, you will also need to submit a 10,000 word dissertation based on research into an original business project to successfully complete the Masters qualification.

The Coventry University Group assessment strategy ensures that our courses are fairly assessed and allows us to monitor student progression towards the achieving the intended learning outcomes.

On successful completion of the Postgraduate Certificate in Leadership and Management you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a critical awareness and systematic understanding of seminal and contemporary theories of leadership and management
  • Communicate a critical awareness of the complex nature of leadership and management theories within a wider organisational and contextual framework
  • Formulate and appraise personal leadership and management skills through self-reflection, personal development planning, analytical thinking and awareness of personal effectiveness
  • Communicate effective academic scholarship skills by judging and systematically presenting arguments from credible sources of information, both orally and in writing, using a range of media

On successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership and Management you will, in addition to the above, be able to:

  • Identify and critically analyse the key leadership and management issues that impact on organisations at a strategic level and appreciate the conflicting pressures from the external environment
  • Critically assess and creatively apply contemporary theories of leadership and management to real life organisations and industries with a specific focus on key areas which affect relationships between business functions and teams
  • Evaluate the credibility and rigour of published research and asses its relevance to modern organisations and industries of today

On successful completion of the Masters in Leadership and Management students you will, in addition to all of the above, be able to:

  • Critically evaluate research methodologies and propose a research pathway which demonstrates reliability, validity and coherence through autonomous planning
  • Select a relevant leadership and management issue and demonstrate a critical awareness of seminal and contemporary theories through originality in the application of knowledge
  • Acquire and analyse primary and/or secondary data demonstrating an understanding of ethical approaches to gathering data for research purposes
  • Synthesise academic theory with independently gathered research data and construct an argument to form recommendations and conclusions for the industry or organisation of choice
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the principles of coaching and mentoring and the theories and practices of strategic leadership

Throughout the course, teaching is typically conducted across five Fridays throughout each semester. Each day of teaching usually runs from 9.30 until 16.00.

In addition to the above face-to-face teaching, additional support is offered through online materials. As an innovative and enterprising institution, the University may also seek to utilise emerging technologies within the student experience. For all courses (whether on-campus, blended, or distance learning), this may mean delivering certain contact hours and assessments via online technologies and methods.

You will also be expected to undertake a significant amount of further self-directed studying in your own time each week, in particular towards the dissertation element of the MA qualification.
