Recognising that some of the traditional business tools and techniques are now outdated as a result of the fast pace of change, we’ll show you the new and innovative approaches to strategy, organisation, operations and finance.

The phenomenon of globalisation can no longer be ignored by any company, whatever their size and scope. Yet as the world becomes increasingly interconnected, opening up new market and trade opportunities, many firms still struggle to come to terms with its implications.

Course information

Combining theory and practice, this course aims to provide a thorough grounding in international business management in an ever-changing global economy.

We aim to equip you with the skills and knowledge to become a flexible, effective manager who can spot market opportunities and drive forward businesses to success in the international arena.

Through the use of guest speakers, use of real case studies and industry visits and fieldtrips, you’ll learn more about the external forces which affect business decisions, including but not limited to the influence some external/or market factors such as fall or rise of oil prices or interest rates. We’ll discuss some of the biggest challenges and issues businesses now face, such as market uncertainties etcetera.

Overview

In the first semester, you will learn about theory and principles underpinning strategic management, as well as the linkages between major business functions and their role in international business and commerce. You’ll study a range of organisations to gain a practical understanding of how they manage their resources and operations, recruit and develop staff, set and monitor budgets, and adapt to change.

We’ll cover the basic principles of marketing – where students will have the opportunity to discuss and analyse key managerial decisions on formulating and executing international marketing activities by developing their knowledge and skills of marketing concepts including environmental analysis, buying behaviour, strategic market segmentation and more. This will be done through active case studies and practical examples.

In the second semester, you have an opportunity to tailor your studies to suit your interests or career aspirations. You may wish to delve deeper into the principles and application of human resource management in the international context or the complexity of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems and how to implement and manage such systems effectively within the options of international human resource management or business process integration respectively. Within the core modules, we will learn about international leadership and management, global markets and entry strategies, international trade management, research methods as well as undertake workshops for the CMI module for which students can gain accreditation and a certificate in professional consultancy.

In your final semester, you can choose to spend time on a company internship, typically lasting eight to 12 weeks. In the past, we have supported students to take on business and product development roles in companies in the UK such as Aston Martin, Jaguar Land Rover to mention a few. There is also a further option of undertaking a self-organised placement or going through the normal dissertation route.

This course includes the Professional Development Module. Each of the participating postgraduate courses have an individually tailored version of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Professional Development module.

With professional experience option

The professional experience opportunity enables you to apply for optional professional experience in semester 1, which, upon successfully securing a opportunity, will extend the duration of your Masters to 24 months. The placement provides an opportunity for you to develop expertise and experience in your chosen field with the aim of enhancing your employability upon graduation.

Please note that the optional professional experience modules incur an additional tuition fee of £4,000. Professional experience opportunities may also be subject to additional costs, visa requirements being met, subject to availability and/or competitive application. Professional experience opportunities are not guaranteed,but you will benefit from the support of our employability and placements team in trying to find and secure an opportunity.

  • Hands-on experience of market-leading software packages including: GMMSO (Global Marketing Management System Online) and EIMSO (Export Import Management System Online) from Janavaras and Associates International, Xsol software and SAP, the world’s leading enterprise resource planning (ERP) software provider.

Guest speakers programme has also drawn in prominent speakers from the field of international business in recent times to share their knowledge and experiences with students. 

Your main study themes are:

  • Strategic Management: This will introduce you to the key issues, theories and debates in international leadership and management. We will consider and debate the differences between leadership and management and will study a range of different perspectives to give a critical understanding of the theory and practice of leadership and management.
  • Critical Issues in Global Business: We will introduce you to the world of international business particularly in emerging markets. While focusing on the nature of the business environment in specific emerging regions, this theme will highlight the importance of global business issues like ethics, sustainable practices, government business linkages, the role of transnationals from advanced economies in emerging markets, and resource driven economic growth in emerging regions. You will be exposed to contemporary issues such as doing business globally, the role of governments, formal and informal networks and the effects of geopolitics on the business environment.
  • Marketing: You will have the opportunity to discuss and analyse key managerial decisions on formulating and executing international marketing activities by developing their knowledge and skills of marketing concepts including environmental analysis, buying behaviour, strategic market segmentation and more. This will be done through active case studies and practical examples.
  • Managing International Trade: Aims to provide you with an introduction to the main issues in international trade, from an operative point of view. In addition to reviewing the main actors, regulations and institutions involved, analysing the world trade exchanges and their characteristics, you will also have the opportunity to engage in the technical and operational aspects of international trade.  This will equip you with some of the necessary tools of export management, in order to enable to immediately put them into practice when you secure employment on graduation.

This course can be studied full-time over one year and may also be taken part-time over two years. You can start in January, May or September.

As well as traditional teaching and learning methods, such as lectures, workshops and seminars, specific subjects adopt a mix of experimental approaches to facilitate richer deeper learning. For example, you will be exposed to real-life case studies with recent examples including the use of guest speakers from industry sharing their expertise and experiences in most modules, participation in online international learning projects with students of participating institutions from other parts of the world, field trips or visits to organisations to experiences how the concepts and theories studied work in practice with recent visits to Manchester, Jaguar Land Rover to mention but a few. As mentioned, we also invite a range of guest speakers who will share experiences of managing change and growth in their organisations, supply chain and logistics strategies, marketing and trade management operations, business development, and more.

We make use of real life and practical case studies to enable you to apply a variety of international business tools and techniques you have studied. For example, in the global markets and entry strategies and managing international trade modules, you will have the opportunity to make use of the GMMSO and EIMSO software to produce your international business plans. You will also be engaged in research based learning on an open community platform such as inoERP, an open source ERP that offers opportunity for students to anchor the pedagogy on digital innovation, for example in the Business Process Integration module.

Many of our teaching staff are research active and will disseminate up-to-date developments in their fields, fostering debate and discussion. For example, recent cohorts have had the opportunity to make use of lecturers’ research outputs in their seminar discussions and drawn case studies for use in their workshops from research outputs of staff on the programme. You will also have the opportunity to conduct your own supervised research as part of your dissertation – past students have examined various international business topics from such themes as strategic management, trade management, internationalisation and business process integrations approaches to mention but a few.

You will have the opportunity to participate in range of field trips and industry visits, at home and abroad, with recent excursions to Manchester United and Jaguar Land Rover in the UK (additional costs may apply).

This course will be assessed using a variety of methods which will could vary depending upon the module. Assessment methods include dissertation/management consultancy project, reports, presentations, formal examinations and practical coursework.

The Coventry University Group assessment strategy ensures that our courses are fairly assessed and allows us to monitor student progression towards the achieving the intended learning outcomes. Assessments may include exams, individual assignments or group work elements.

On successful completion, you should be able to:

  • Evaluate the impact of external forces on organisations including: legal systems; ethical, economic, environmental, social and technological change issues; international developments and corporate governance.• Understand the principles of marketing including: the identification of markets and customers; the development and operation of markets for resources, goods and services; expectations of customers and equivalent stakeholders, service and orientation; the marketing of goods and/or services.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the financing of the business enterprise or other forms of organisations: sources, uses and management of finance; use of accounting for managerial and financial reporting applications.
  • Effectively manage and develop people within organisations with a firm grounding in organisational theory, behaviour, industrial/employee relations, human resource management and change management.
  • Use a range of research methods, both qualitative and quantitative, and understand their strengths and weaknesses for providing information and evaluating options in an uncertain organisational environment.
  • Develop and manage information systems, relevant communication and information technologies for application in business and management within a global knowledge-based economy.
  • Apply a wide range of business and management models and theories in an international organisational context.
  • Conduct research into business and management issues to effectively solve business problems, ranging from cultural issues to the challenges of international politics and law.

In a typical week you will have up to 14 ‘contact’ hours of teaching. This generally breaks down as follows: 

  • Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 1 hour of tutorials each week.
  • Medium group teaching: 4 hours of practical classes, workshops or seminars each week.
  • Large group teaching: 9 hours of lectures each week.

In addition, you will be expected to undertake a further 26 hours of self-directed studying and revising in your own time each week, including some guided study using handouts, online activities etc.

We organise a number of national and international field visits, which have recently included trips to Paris, Berlin and New York to visit such institutions as UNESCO and other multinational enterprises to tour their facilities and learn about their operations. 
You will also have the chance to collaborate with students from other international universities on online international learning (OIL) projects, for example, through our collaborations this year, students from our programme will be undertaking an OIL project with students from our partner institution in Tanzania in January 2017.

You may also able to learn direct from international business leaders from across the world, who are invited as guest lecturers on modules to share their knowledge and experience over skype. Furthermore, the international experience of the course team means you will benefit from the experience of lecturers on business operations from Asia, Middle East, Europe, Africa to mention but a few.

EU student fees

EU nationals and their family members starting in the 2019/20 academic year remain eligible for the same fees as home students and the same financial support. Financial support comes from Student Finance England, and covers undergraduate and postgraduate study for the duration of their course, providing they meet the residency requirement.
