Coventry University’s decision to further its commitment to cleaner mobility has led it to establish the Centre for Advanced Low Carbon Propulsion Systems (C-ALPS).

The university’s strong reputation for research into future transport solutions attracted the attention of global engineering firm FEV, with the company ultimately deciding to locate its UK operations at the C-ALPS site. The resulting £50m facility is the latest addition to the Coventry University’ impressive cohort of facilities.

C-ALPS is concerned with advancing the progression to zero-carbon mobility via research into enabling technologies, including the key areas of battery development and manufacture and hydrogen fuel cells. Research students at the Centre therefore benefit from access to a range of cutting-edge facilities and leading academic experts besides receiving commercial insight from an international engineering consultancy. FEV gains from the arrangement with ready access to research and development capability and the ability to undertake collaborative projects.

FEV has further recognised the value in supporting the next generation of clean mobility researchers and powertrain engineers via a sponsored studentship programme. This has seen the company fund a number of PhD opportunities for research students to undertake at the C-ALPS facility, providing a cost-effective route to R&D for industry applications while enabling students to gain valuable experience.

With the future of mobility being one of the UK government’s grand challenges amidst ever-increasing awareness of our environmental impact, the development of low-carbon alternative mobility solutions is of huge national (and international) importance. C-ALPS is committed to supporting UK industry in staying ahead of the curve in a rapidly developing sector.

Since the start of this collaboration we have funded postgraduate research and developed the topics that we’re going to work together on, with the ultimate aim of decarbonising transport.

The key benefit is that we’re bringing together pioneering research with FEV’s expertise as an engineering service provider to ensure that our customers receive an all-in-one solution, meaning that research is focused on the areas that matter most to industry.
