Introduction
Hello! My name is Anurag Venkataramanan, and I am currently in my final year of studying a bachelor's degree in Biomedical Science. Today, I would like to talk about my experience at Coventry University, as well as my Biomedical Science course.
I am 20 years old, and I live with my family in Nuneaton. I’ve been in the UK for more than 10 years, over three periods. I chose to study Biomedical Science because I am very fascinated by the opportunities it offers; I also learnt that biomedical scientists are sometimes known as the ‘silent heroes’ in healthcare. I would love to share some of my experience about my course and tips to become the best version of yourself at uni.
Ask for help
Initially, I assumed that I was fine and didn’t need the support of my lecturers, success coach, etc. But I soon realised that things are at a whole different level compared to the high school I went to in London.
At first, I was a bit nervous and didn’t know my way around, but I managed to utilise the resources available to me effectively. This means actively making use of the available help and support that your lecturers, success coaches and other staff members can provide you with. It is highly recommended that you use this support before the opportunity passes. Thankfully, I have used every single opportunity up until now in my final year. If you can consistently use this, you’ll be in good hands.
Meeting new people
Now, this was the part which I am good at doing now. I found it hard to find friends at first, especially when I used to mingle with my cohort every day during class. But through various means, I managed to find a lot of international students who are Indian and live in Coventry.
I found it a lot easier, as they were from the same region in India and spoke the same language as me (Tamil, sometimes Hindi, and English). Finding a network of this type really helped me to find my feet at university.
Join societies and clubs
After joining Coventry University, I also became part of Your Students’ Union, which helps students enjoy the university experience. I tried out various things there, from being a rep to joining societies. Joining societies really helped me find new friends and improve my networking skills. I love contributing to big things, so I joined the Indian Society (winning a trophy there) and the Biomedical Science Society.
My experience overall
It’s been a very rewarding experience. I have spent three years learning the skills to become a biomedical scientist, exploring various topics around the subject and discovering new opportunities to improve and grow as an individual keen to work in a laboratory setting.
My advice for you guys is: “Help is given to those who ask for it”.
