Choosing a university is about more than picking a subject. It’s about how you’ll learn and how that prepares you for what comes next.
That’s why, at Coventry University, learning is active and applied. From the very start, you’ll take part in practical activities, such as tasks, projects and real-world challenges, designed to help you understand your subject and begin developing career-focused skills.
What does active and applied learning mean?
It means you’re involved — not just listening.
Depending on your course, you may:
- work on live briefs or real-world case studies
- take part in simulations or specialist lab sessions
- collaborate in teams to solve problems
- present your ideas and receive regular feedback.
Our approach is built on the following principles:
- Active: you take part.
- Applied: learning connects to real-world situations.
- Social: collaboration with peers and staff is encouraged.
- Inclusive: learning is designed to be accessible and fair.
We support your learning through a range of interactive digital tools designed to help you access materials, collaborate with others and stay on track. These include a central online space for course content, feedback and timetables, as well as platforms that enable live, interactive teaching sessions. Through these tools, you can take part in discussions, stay connected to your course, and build the digital and communication skills employers value.
We use platforms like Aula to stay connected, access resources and collaborate on projects, so you can fully take part whether you’re on campus or off.

A focused way to learn
For most courses, you’ll study one module at a time in focused six-week blocks1. This allows you to:
- concentrate fully on topic without juggling multiple modules
- build understanding step by step, boosting your confidence
- receive regular feedback to guide your progress
- complete assessments throughout the year rather than all at once.
Rather than relying only on final end-of-year exams, your progress is measured across the year so you can improve as you go.
Don’t just take our word for it. Hear from Olaitan, one of our London campus graduates as to why this approach worked for him.
Learning shaped by industry
Your course is designed to reflect how your subject works in practical and professional contexts. Our academics work with employers and, where relevant, professional bodies to shape course content, so what you’re learning reflects current professional practice. Depending on your course, this may include:
- employer-led projects
- industry networking events and competitions
- guest speakers from industry
- placements or internships2
- professional accreditation3 (where applicable).
In my course, we work on projects with supervisors, tackle various case studies, and learn how to work as a group in laboratory sessions to showcase what actually happens in the hospitals, while working as biomedical scientists.

Active learning across subjects
Active and applied learning looks different depending on what you study, but the goal is always the same: to help you practise the skills that are used in your future field before you enter the job market. That could mean:
- designing a marketing campaign for a real client
- building a prototype in an engineering lab
- simulating a courtroom in a mock trial
- developing a business plan for a start-up
- creating a performance for a live audience.
Putting your skills into practice
Across all subject areas, you’ll apply knowledge, reflect on feedback and build confidence through experience that you can talk about in interviews.
