BBC Radio 2’s Jeremy Vine will reminisce about his early career as a journalist in Coventry during a public talk.

He will recall his experiences as a newspaper trainee in the city and reveal how they shaped his subsequent working life, at the event on Monday (21 May) hosted by Coventry University.

Audience members – including the university’s own journalism and media and communications students - will also be able to ask Jeremy questions.

The free talk is part of the BBC’s Biggest Weekend Fringe programme, a series of events held in and around Coventry in the run up to the two-day music festival, which takes place at the city’s War Memorial Park on 27 and 28 May.

Jeremy began his career in journalism as a trainee reporter at the Coventry Evening Telegraph, now known as the Coventry Telegraph, in 1986.

He moved to join the BBC in 1987 and has since gone on to present Newsnight, Crimewatch and Panorama as well as his popular Radio 2 show. He also currently hosts TV quiz show Eggheads.

The talk is a welcome return to the university for Jeremy, who opened the media department’s refurbished radio studio in 2010.

Jeremy is not the only Radio 2 presenter who has a connection to Coventry.

Long-standing travel presenter Lynn Bowles graduated from Coventry University, then called the Lanchester Polytechnic, with a BA degree in communications in 1986.

It was announced on her final show for the station earlier this year that she will receive an honorary doctorate from the university.

Professor Judith Mossman, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Arts and Humanities, said:

Anyone who listens to Jeremy’s Radio 2 show or who has followed his career will know that he is a great presenter and a talented journalist. It should be a fascinating evening listening to him recall his early days in journalism in Coventry. I am sure it will inspire and entertain our students, staff and the members of the public who come along to hear him speak.

Jeremy Vine said:

I always look forward to returning to the city where I started my career as a young reporter on the Coventry Evening Telegraph.

The talk takes place on Monday 21 May at the Weston Lecture Theatre in the university’s Engineering and Computing Building, in Gulson Road.

Doors open from 5.30pm.

Tickets for members of the are available on a first come first served basis. They are available here.

University staff and students can book tickets via the registration link on Message of the Day on the staff portal or via Moodle.
