A new centre to help tackle the threat of terrorism across the globe could soon become a reality thanks to Coventry University and the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO).
The Joint Centre for Security and Counter-Terrorism could see these leading universities share research expertise and develop work around the protection of people and places through the deterrence, management and mitigation of risk from terrorism and other security threats.
The jointly-badged laboratory would aim to achieve this through helping people, business and organisations understand security risks, help businesses prepare more efficiently and effectively, and evaluate how future security and counter-terrorism challenges could change over the next decade.
I’m excited to cement our existing relationships with the University of Central Oklahoma and combine the expertise of our world-leading researchers to build on our security research. The Joint Centre for Security and Counter-Terrorism would aim to leverage valuable expertise and networks to help further the impact of research on protecting people, places and infrastructure in the UK, US and internationally.
Professor David McIlhatton, Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research at Coventry University
The collaboration between the University of Central Oklahoma and Coventry University to establish the Center in Security and Counterterrorism is a profound step forward for both our institutions and our state. Oklahoma's history, especially with the Oklahoma City Murrah Building bombing, underscores the need for advanced research and education in security.
The timing of this initiative, aligning with the anniversary of the September 11 attacks, serves as a poignant reminder of the global impact of terrorism and the importance of preparing future leaders to confront these challenges head-on. This Center will position Oklahoma as a leader in counterterrorism efforts, enhancing the safety of our communities and beyond.
Todd G. Lamb, President of the University of Central Oklahoma
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) outlining discussions around the proposals was signed by President Lamb and Coventry University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Professor Richard Dashwood, at the 16th Annual Society for Terrorism Research International Conference, co-hosted by both universities and held at UCO’s campus.
