Accommodation Frequently Asked Questions FAQs

Accommodation Frequently Asked Questions FAQs

About the Accommodation

  • The accommodation we have is a mix of University-owned halls and private halls of residence which we have a partnership with. This is specified in our webpages, online application portal, and in our accommodation brochure.

  • Generally, we offer 39 or 43 week contracts for Undergraduates and 50 week contracts for Postgraduates. These contract lengths are NOT related to your course length, so check with your faculty first what your term dates will be before submitting your accommodation application.

Although our contract lengths do generally cover the vast majority of courses, we can provide extensions where needed, provided we are notified in advance.

For partner halls, please check with them directly.

  • Our flats are mostly mixed sex, but we do have a number of single sex flats for those who need it. We ask you to specify your gender sharing preferences in your application and we will do our best to accommodate it, but it is not guaranteed.

  • We allocate rooms based on the date you submitted your application, not by course. This means the residents in each flat will study a mix of courses.

  • Our University-owned accommodation is reasonably secure, although the security features vary from property to property, but in general includes 24hr Protection Service patrols, CCTV, access control by multiple key/fob entry points. Bishop Gate, Godiva Place and The Cycle Works also have security gates within the entry foyers.

For partner halls, please check with them directly.

  • We guarantee University Halls accommodation to applicants who make Coventry University their Firm choice AND who submit an online application before 18th July 2022. The allocated property is the best available on the day of allocation subject to availability on a first-come-first-served-basis. Allocations to rooms and properties will only be made once your academic place has been confirmed, which is normally when all the conditions of your course offer have been met. (Applicable to students starting their course in September 2022 only).

  • This is entirely personal, based on your own preferences and requirements. You may want to consider things like:

    How big are the flats?

    How big is the hall?

Is it ensuite or shared bathrooms?

How far away from campus is it?

    How much is the rent?

  • There is a 'group' section in our application, where you can enter a 'group reference' for your and your friends' application. This reference is created by you, and all members of your group need to enter it into each member's application, and all members would need to apply for the same accommodation for them to be allocated together. We will try wherever possible to allocate groups together but it is not guaranteed, as some applications (e.g. unconditional students) can be allocated earlier than others (e.g. conditional students).

  • We do have a variety of adapted rooms, including fully adapted, partially adapted, and deaf-adapted. You can specify in your application whether you would require an adapted room and which kind of adaptation you would need. Please note we may ask for medical evidence to support any application for these room types as they are subject to availability. Please refer to our Care Leavers and Disability page for more information.

  • We offer full-year contracts in our accommodations for Care Leavers. We also offer a support scheme so you can get 100% discount off your rent (subject to availability) - please check our Care Leavers and Disability page for more information.

  • We do reserve a number of rooms in halls for returning (2nd or 3rd year) students, subject to availability. We will email residents when applications open for returner rooms. We also have a number of showflat rooms available for returning students, which come with a discount or reward for showing their room on open day events (subject to additional T&Cs).

  • Pets are NOT allowed in any of our accommodations. Animals for medical or rehabilitation purposes may be allowed, subject to medical evidence and additional T&Cs.

For partner halls, please check with them directly.

  • Yes, you can. You can have 1 guest staying for a miximum of 2 nights in any 7 day period, and this will need to be approved by your Residence Officer by submitting an overnight guest request form 3 days in advance. Day guests are also allowed until 11pm in the evening.

For partner halls, please check with them directly.

  • Laundry facilities are available on each site, but they charge for usage. In University-owned halls it is usually £2.20 for a wash and £1.20 for a dry cycle (prices may vary). They usually work on a top-up card so you don't have to have the right coins or change to use them.

For partner halls, please check with them directly.

  • We do provide contents insurance in our University-owned halls, courtesy of Endsleigh. It covers all the basics but you also have the chance to buy additional cover if you're bringing lots of devices with you, or specific items which you want to be covered separately. We'll send more information about what's covered in the weeks before you arrive in halls.

Applying for Accommodation

  • Applications open to Firm students from March the year you are due to start your course. If you make Coventry your Firm choice after that time, you will be invited to apply.

Insurance students can apply once they have changed their options to reflect Coventry as their new Firm choice - this may be once they receive their A-level results in August.

For students starting in January or May, please check our timelines on the How to Apply page.

  • We recommend you apply for accommodation as soon as you are eligible (Coventry as your Firm choice). You will be asked to make several options on the application and we recommend you apply for as many options as the application will allow (this will vary depending on whether you are undergraduate, postgraduate or exchange). This will give us the best chance of offering you one of your choices.

You can apply for accommodation on our online applications portal.

  • Yes, as long as Coventry is your Firm choice.

  • Deferred students apply for accommodation during the months before they are due to study.

For example, if you are due to start your course in September 2022, you would apply in the Spring 2022.

  • Yes, we have accommodation contracts for 1 term or 2 terms in some of our halls, as well as the full academic year. The choices available may vary from year to year so please check our application portal for the latest information.

  • Yes, we have accommodation for students starting their courses in January and May intakes. Please check our webpages and our application portal for the latest information on the options available.

January applications generally open in October, and May applications generally open in February.

  • No, you don't need a visa to be able to apply for accommodation. We will offer you a room (subject to availability) once you have met all the conditions of your course offer, and you have received your CAS.

For all EU students arriving on or after 1st January 2021, this requirement will also apply.

  • Yes you can, once Coventry is listed as your Firm choice in your UCAS choices. We still have accommodation available at Clearing but it is subject to availability.

  • You will receive an offer of accommodation once you have met the conditions of your course offer (become CFA or UF). We begin sending offers of accommodation out from May to students who have met these conditions.

This means you may apply in March and receive an offer in August when the A-level results are released - it may be a long time to wait but don't worry!

Once you receive your offer, you will have 5 days to accept your offer online and pay your deposit.

  • For University-owned halls, you have to pay a £300 Advance Licence Fee Deposit when you are offered a room - this is a small portion of your rent paid upfront, to accept a room offer. It is not refundable at the end of the contract.

International and EU students will also be required to pay their first instalment of rent when they accept an offer of accommodation.

You MUST ensure you have the means to pay the deposit from the time you expect to meet your course conditions (e.g. August), or immediately if you are applying as an unconditional student.

Once you have received an offer of accommodation, you will have 5 days to accept your offer online and pay your deposit.

For partner halls, the deposit amount and type may vary, and will be spcified on the relevant proprty information pages.

  • You have the option to reject any offer of accommodation we make to you, and you can reapply but your application will start at the bottom of the list and we cannot guarantee we will be able to make you another offer.

The rooms we offer are the best available on the day based on your application choices.

  • Please consider your requirements carefully before booking accommodation. The Licence to Occupy is a legally binding contract between you and the University. By confirming your acceptance of the Offer of University Accommodation you agree to pay the Licence Fee in full and to abide with the Licence to Occupy for the period of the entire Residential Year.

If you book your accommodation with FutureLets and then decide to move to a fully online course delivery, you remain responsible for the Licence to Occupy and accommodation fees for the period of the entire Residential Year.

Please be aware that if you receive a student maintenance loan by the Student Loans Company (SLC) but decide to study fully online, this will affect your eligibility for a student maintenance loan from the SLC.

  • The Licence to Occupy is legally binding under UK law and there is no cooling off period or right to withdraw from the contract or Licence to Occupy once signed, even if you have made no payment. For further information on accommodation terms and conditions, visit our T&Cs page.

If you would like your housing contract checked or have any questions about the contract, please contact for assistance before signing or agreeing to the Licence to Occupy.

You can also check the 2022 Licence to occupy document.
