Course information

The MSc Risk Management course aims to equip you with the specialist knowledge of risk management and application of risk management tools and techniques within the context of organisations in diverse industries. It looks to develop industry-ready and occupationally competent graduates with a wide range of the skills and attributes required for potential careers in risk management.

Successful risk management practitioners have the ability to think strategically, to communicate effectively and to implement complex business projects, solve complex issues, and develop both proactive and reactive response strategies for organisations. To help with this, the course emphasises building problem-solving skills across several of the core modules and also through the use of business simulations and appropriate software and hardware solutions, sometimes even including virtual reality (VR) headsets and accessories (subject to availability).

The MSc Risk Management course can help you to develop an analytic, digital and conceptual perspective in the management of risk and the ability to apply critical skills to the functions and processes that drive business and organisations today.

In addition to subject knowledge, emphasis is also placed on communication skills in a variety of forms including written and presentation (individual and group). The globalised nature of contemporary organisations makes communication a key employability skill. When taking into account organisational and national culture, together with different time zones and the geographical spread of teams, communication can be difficult. As a result, the MSc Risk Management course emphasises communication throughout the course and will see you working with others in groups to simulate working in risk management teams.

Both of the ‘Postgraduate Business Project’ and ‘Consultancy Skills’ modules provide a context for learning advanced quantitative and qualitative research methods, collating sources of information and writing a substantial individual piece of work which should demonstrate your ability to relate academic knowledge to organisational practice.

The course should also look to develop your strategic thinking, effective communication, consultancy and research skills, all directly relevant to employers and such skills are designed to be of significant value when seeking future employment.

In your final semester, you can choose to spend time on a company internship *, typically lasting eight to 12 weeks (subject to competitive application, availability and meeting visa requirements, plus additional fees may apply).

Participants should also develop in-depth understanding of how risk conception is shaped by social phenomenon and how organisations respond and adapt.
  • Cyber security risk management: Due to the interconnected nature of contemporary societies and the extensive use of ICT, cyber security management requires joined-up thinking from strategy through to operations and contingency planning. This module seeks to provide students with comprehensive knowledge of information security concepts and an understanding of how they are applied using Internet and mobile technologies. The importance of a security policy and security management is considered. Students should gain a systematic understanding of the threats posed to organisations and businesses due to security risks. Students should develop comprehensive understanding of the legal, policy and technical approaches that are necessary to mitigate such risks. Detailed coverage of various security technologies aims to enable students to gain a critical awareness of the latest problems and best practices in the design of secure architectures. Students should also benefit from an in-depth understanding of risk assessment strategies including identifying and assessing level of risk that will enable the design of an information security management system in accordance with accepted standards.
  • Data and Risk Management: You will have the opportunity to learn how to comprise and apply the processes and statistical techniques that enable practitioners and researchers to identify, analyse, respond to, and monitor, risk at various stages. This module is designed to help provide in-depth understanding of descriptive and predictive stages of data in risk analysis. The aim is to give students the ability to describe, estimate and evaluate these concepts with an emphasis on risk analyses.
  • Decision analysis: The purpose of the Risk Strategies for Organisational Decisions module is to help provide students with a broad understanding and knowledge of several decision-making tools and techniques as well as optimisation methods which can be used to make proper decisions for risk-related issues in various industries/sectors. Students should be able to understand, analyse and model risk-related situations using the Operational Research and provide proper solutions.
  • Sustainable Approach to Risk Management: This module seeks to develop a critical approach to current theoretical and practical aspects of sustainability, particularly focusing on risk management and the problems associated with implementing strategic decisions. The wide-ranging debate on the variety of approaches to business ethics, CSR, SDG and corporate governance that encapsulate organisational sustainability is investigated. Students are encouraged to tackle complex issues, to understand the inter-related aspects of organisational sustainability and to help develop solutions to multi-faceted problems. What our academics say

Students learn from day one that risk is not an occasional consideration. Assessment must be ongoing as disruptive phenomena, like Coronavirus for example, expose organisations to operational risk and interrupt normal business. Risk management is key to organisations' survival.

What our academics say

Risk management is key in organisations because, without it, they cannot possibly define objectives for the future. If a company defines objectives without considering the risks, then chances are that they will lose direction if any of these risks happen.
