Overview

Are you looking for a career change or to develop your career? Are you considering a move into management? In today’s globally connected environment, a manager’s practice needs to be ethically based and culturally sensitive.

This course will enhance your ability to respond to the needs of the modern world by thinking critically and strategically in seeking solutions to complex problems. An MBA qualification will help you work towards better career prospects and salary.

The MBA can be studied full time via face-to-face delivery or part-time via online delivery. In addition we offer a specialised sector pathway in cyber security management to study part time online only.

The course consists of three distinct but interconnected stages:

  • Certificate - The modern enterprise and business environment – how does it work?
The Certificate phase will develop a resource based view of the business enterprise and examine how value is created, including the impact of the wider business environment on the enterprise’s value creation activities.
  • Diploma - Preparing for tomorrow – what needs to change?
In the Diploma stage the focus shifts to considering the manager’s role in the development of an enterprise in response to the internal and external context, to create sustainable value.
  • Masters – Management in action – bringing about change
The Masters phase of the programme will focus more specifically on particular sectors and/or roles (including general management and leadership) depending on the your chosen pathway. The emphasis will be on exploring, critically evaluating and applying a range of sector/ role specific models and concepts within a practice setting/ context.

The course will also support you to clarify and develop your career goals as you progress through and encourage reflection on how your goals might be met.

Modules

Overview

Modules

In more detail...

You will develop a broad and holistic view of how businesses operate, including the impact of the external environment. This involves looking at an organisation from different perspectives: the organisation as a learning entity made up of individuals, as a combination of inter-related processes focused on adding value, and as a financial entity focused on creating monetary returns.

We will focus on exploring the role of a manager as a strategic leader and the role managers play in organisations to develop and adapt to environment changes.

As part of this course you will be required to develop approaches and solutions to work-based problems which are innovative and creative, developing the ability to be entrepreneurial in your professional practice.

This course will also focus on exploring and developing sector and role specific knowledge to support your career growth and future aspirations.

The course may be studied full time over one year or part-time over two to five years to suit students currently in employment. You can start in September or January for the face-to-face delivery. For online delivery of the course you can start in September, January or May.

The underlying focus is on developing your ability to think critically and strategically and to enable you to develop solutions to complex problems within an ever changing and ambiguous business environment. As well as traditional teaching and learning methods, such as lectures, workshops and seminars, you will benefit from innovative and interactive online content and activities. This opens up opportunities to participate in projects with students from around the world. The online and face-to-face contact between you, your lecturers and fellow students will help you stay motivated and committed to learning.

One of the key aims of the programme is to provide you with experiences of real-life organisations, so you will also be exposed to real-life case studies, simulations and engaging guest speakers from industry who will share their expertise and experiences of developing strategy, managing change and growth in their organisations, bringing both contemporary and theoretical concepts to life.

Many of our teaching staff are research active and will disseminate up-to-date developments in their fields, encouraging debate and discussion. You will also have the opportunity to conduct your own supervised research as part of your MBA consultancy project.

Developing you and your future career

During your studies you will have access to professional management coaches to help you to develop and enhance your skills and capabilities and identify your career goals.

Mixed assessment modes offer students a range of opportunities to demonstrate their achievement of learning outcomes. Learning will be assessed through a combination of coursework assignments, business plans, presentations and online activities. Modules are mostly worth 15 credits and the MBA Consultancy Project is worth 30 credits.

As part of the degree, you will initiate and lead a change project within a practice setting. To do this successfully you will be required to apply knowledge drawn from across the course and to demonstrate the strategic thought and leadership capabilities which are core to the course.

An estimated percentage breakdown of your final grade assessment is as follows:

  • MBA Consultancy Project: 15%
  • Reports/Business Plans/Case Studies/Competitor Analysis/Competitor Analysis/Self-reflections: 70%
  • Presentations/Videos: 15%

On successful completion of the Certificate stage (60 credits) students will be eligible for a Postgraduate Certificate in Business Administration

On successful completion of the Diploma stage (120 credits) students will be eligible for a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration

On successful completion of the Masters stage (180 credits) students will be eligible for a Masters in Business Administration (MBA)

Masters level awards will be made with a ‘Distinction’, ‘Merit’ or ‘Pass’ grade.

  • Demonstrate reflective practice for the development and achievement of personal career goals.

For the face-to-face delivery in a typical week you will have 12 to 14 ‘contact’ hours of teaching.

In addition you will be expected to undertake a further 26-28 hours of self-directed studying and revising in your own time each week, including some guided study using handouts, case studies, journal articles, online activities etc.

You will have opportunities to collaborate with students from around the world both in person and via our online platform.

You will also be able to learn direct from a range of international business leaders who are invited as guest speakers to share their knowledge and experiences. Furthermore the international nature of our design and delivery course team will provide you with a diverse range of experiences from Asia, Europe and Africa.
