Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Checks for Students

DBS Check for Students

Coventry University, Coventry University London, CU Coventry, CU London and CU Scarborough come together to form part of the Coventry University Group (the “University”). Students enrolling with the Coventry University Group (the Group) on courses that lead to a professional qualification, statutory registration, with a Professional, Statutory or Regulatory Body (PSRB), and/or eligibility to practise need to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (“DBS”) check.

A small number of courses may include a placement, which requires engagement in what is known as a Regulated Activity, relating to working with children or vulnerable individuals. Therefore the need for DBS clearance also applies to any student undertaking this type of placement.

Enrolment on these courses and modules is therefore subject to the receipt of satisfactory DBS clearance and the University reserves the right to withdraw the offer of a place to any student who fails to produce a satisfactory certificate.

If you are applying to the University, and your course requires a DBS check, it will be detailed on the course web page. Use our course search to see if your course requires a DBS check. When you are offered a place on a course, your offer letter will also outline any DBS requirement.

If you are a current student considering taking a module that requires a DBS check, your college or school will let you know. You can also check if a DBS is required by reading the Module Information Directory (MID).

Applications for DBS checks are managed by our partner company, Atlantic Data Ltd. By applying for a course or module requiring a DBS check, you are agreeing to Coventry University sharing limited personal information (that you will have previously provided to us) with Atlantic Data Ltd, including:

  • Your name
  • Your gender
  • Your date of birth
  • Your e-mail address (If you are a current student, this will be your university e-mail)

If you are a new student, shortly before enrolment at the University, you will be sent an e-mail from us asking you to log-on to the University’s portal and to complete the application.

If you are a current student, you will receive an e-mail to your University e-mail address shortly after you re-enrol asking you to log-on to the University’s DBS portal and to complete the application.

Please note that whether you are a new or existing Coventry University student, as part of the application process, you will need to visit a Crown Post Office and present three forms of ID as a verification check.
