Coventry University’s Professor James Brusey, a leading figure in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and reinforcement learning, has been appointed as an Innovate UK BridgeAI Independent Scientific Advisor at The Alan Turing Institute, the UK’s national centre for data science and AI.
Reinforcement learning – a type of machine learning focused on solving sequential decision problems, like navigating a maze where the impact of actions may only be seen later – is Professor Brusey’s area of expertise.
Professor Brusey, who leads the Human-Centred Reinforcement Learning theme at the university’s Research Centre for Computational Science and Mathematical Modelling, will bring strategic insight to BridgeAI, a flagship programme delivered by the Institute in partnership with Innovate UK.
The initiative is designed to accelerate the adoption of trustworthy AI among SMEs in sectors such as construction, transport and the creative industries.
His appointment follows a rigorous selection process and recognises his leading expertise at the intersection of digital and physical systems, an area driving innovation in sectors from smart manufacturing to connected healthcare.
Professor Brusey has consistently demonstrated how AI can enhance decision-making in complex real-world environments offering a global portfolio that includes collaborations with Volvo, Toyota and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.
Commenting on his new role, Professor Brusey said:
My passion is making complex ideas accessible. I’ve spent years helping researchers and practitioners build their understanding of AI, and I’m thrilled to now support UK SMEs in unlocking its potential.
It’s encouraging to see government backing for trustworthy AI, and I look forward to shaping this transformative journey through the BridgeAI programme.
