Event details

This masterclass is part of a series of events run by the Coventry University Clean Futures Catalyst programme.

Clean Futures is partnering with Auditel, an established carbon solutions organisation in the UK, to offer SMEs in the West Midlands transport sector and its supply chain this high value and impactful 1-day workshop. This workshop is an important first step in helping your organisation on its journey towards Net Zero, providing a high-level overview of your carbon emissions and carbon reduction guidance.

Many organisations believe the changes that they will have to make to achieve net zero carbon emissions will be time-consuming, costly and with all the conflicting information, a little daunting. This is far from the truth, and there are many incentives to help businesses become greener and leaner without costing the earth.

What you will be required to do prior to the workshop

This is a premium opportunity, and all participant SMEs will complete a survey to allow Auditel to calculate a high-level overview of their carbon footprint. This survey will cover data on:

  • Scope 1 emission sources (e.g. fuel purchases)
  • Scope 2 emission sources (e.g. electricity consumption)
  • Relevant scope 3 emission sources (e.g. employee commuting data)

You will be required to submit this data to Auditel no later than two weeks prior to the workshop to allow your registered to be confirmed.

Benefits of attending

  • SMEs will come away from the workshop with an intermediate knowledge of carbon and net zero, an ability to carry out basic calculations, knowledge of their organisations top line environmental impact and an action plan for decarbonisation of their organisation.
  • SMEs should be able to speak with authority on their environmental impact and make informed decisions about decarbonisation strategies. The workshop should give them confidence to bid for contracts that demand declaration of a bidder’s environmental impact as part of the tender process, therefore supporting business growth.
  • SMEs will also be equipped to make use of grants and support initiatives that are available to help them deliver on their sustainability targets.

Agenda

Morning

  • Registration and networking
  • Introduction to decarbonisation – a top-level introduction to what a carbon footprint is and why businesses invest in one. It will also discuss Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, what they relate to, and the data needed to calculate them.
  • A session discussing GHG protocol standards, verification standards and signposting them towards available e-learning resources.
  • Global Net Zero targets and how the UK is planning to meet these.
  • Reporting standards and SME implications, also a discussion about how procurement is driving the move towards Net Zero (eg PPN 06/21)

Working lunch

  • Individual reports will be shared with delegates with top line feedback during working lunch, preparing them for the afternoon session.

Afternoon

  • A group discussion where the group will cover the merits of reduction of energy consumed v capital projects and how these can be balanced.
  • Science based targets and how these can help achieve Net Zero.
  • Exercise – SMEs to pull together a top-line carbon reduction plan and share the key points along with rationale with the group.
  • Each SME to make commitments on how they will use the knowledge gained during the workshop to benefit their organisation.
