The cut-flower industry uses a lot of packaging. Between grower and the final delivery of a bouquet, flowers may be packaged several times. Plastic sleeves, containers, gift wrapping, ribbons and floral foam are all widely used by florists, to protect and enhance their product and keep flowers hydrated.
Single use packaging, and plastic waste in particular, has become a huge concern in the global environment. Customers are increasingly aware of environmental issues and want to buy from businesses that are acting responsibly. Tackling waste is one of the most important ways businesses can begin to address environmental issues, and it makes good business sense to look for ways to reduce waste and improve efficiency.
At this event, we're launching a booklet and other resources to provide guidance on managing plastics, packaging and waste issues within the UK floriculture sector.
The event will offer practical guidance, exhibits and demonstrations, which will be explored through interactive sessions to engage florists and other industry stakeholders.
The event will also offer the opportunity to establish the next steps for the Plastics Packaging and Waste working group which has been convened by Coventry and Surrey universities.
Please contact Professor David Bek before registering as this event is invite only.
