Event details

This presentation will describe two research projects relating to GAI that have recently been undertaken at Deakin University in Australia.

Project 1

What do students do with generative artificial intelligence in assessment, and what do academics think?

This presentation will describe two rese?

This project used a qualitative interpretivist approach via in-depth interviews conducted with 17 students and 11 academics from an Australian University in 2023-2024. The aim was to explore the lived experience of GAI in relation to assessment for academics and students in higher education. Interviews explored participants’ understanding and use of GAI tools, impact of GAI tools on assessment practices, and the role of universities given GAI. Findings of this project will be shared with opportunity for discussion.

Project 2

Program wide approaches to reviewing the impact of Generative Artificial Intelligence on Assessment

This project is using qualitative methods including focus groups, interviews and reflections of researchers to explore the experience of using a program-wide approach to reviewing assessment given the emergence of GAI. More specifically the study is exploring:

  • The features that support, and challenges that arise, when implementing a program-wide approach to reviewing the impact of GAI on assessment,
  • the benefits/outcomes of a program-wide approach to reviewing assessment in light of GAI, and,
  • the important features for program-wide approaches to reviewing the impact of GAI on assessment?

Preliminary findings of the project will be shared with opportunity for discussion.
