Recent advances in Energy Conservation Techniques for Buildings Workshop: From Micro scale to Urban level
Partner countries, UK and Turkey, seek to improve energy efficiency and sustainability of the existing and new built environment. This can only be achieved by introducing novel technologies, low carbon solutions, renewable energy integration and better urban planning. The UK have well established urban planning infrastructure, whereas Turkey has a heritage of architectural design, cultural aspects, and diverse urban planning.
The aim of this workshop is to address recent advances in energy conservation techniques for buildings: from Micro scale to Urban level. The workshop will place an emphasis on setting up future objectives for research, networking, sharing knowledge about what works in the UK and Turkey, and planning for improved measures for energy and resource efficient infrastructure. Workshop objective of energy conservation in the built environment is visualised through four key components (i) Renewable Energy application (ii) New Technologies (iii) ICT and smarter households and smarter cities and (iv) human behaviour. These aspects will be covered through setting strategies in four main areas: (i) Building and community level (neighbourhood design) energy conservation potential; (ii) Low carbon sustainable technologies innovations alternative building materials and energy conservation techniques; (iii) Transforming building envelopes for building greenery - health and psychological impact and (iv) Early stage urban planning for Renewable Energy Integration.
Under the Researcher Links scheme offered within the Newton Fund and the British Council a workshop on the above theme will be held in Istanbul Technical University, Turkey, between December 4th and 8th. The workshop is being coordinated by Prof. Shuli Liu (Coventry University, UK) and Dr. Kerem Yavuz Arslanli (Istanbul Techical University, Turkey) and will have contributions from other leading researchers Dr. Ashish Shukla (Coventry), Dr. Anil Kashyap (Bristol), Dr. Ulas Akin (Istanbul) and Assoc. Prof. Begum Sertyesilisik (Istanbul).
We are now inviting (i) Designers and researchers experienced in sustainable infrastructure, urban planning and design; (ii) Early Career Researchers, experts in low-carbon technologies, alternative materials and construction; (iii) National Housing Authority representatives; (iv) Housing Sector planners; and (v) Policy makers, from the UK and Turkey, to attend this workshop. Participation is free and successful applicants will receive all expenses covering travel and accommodation incurred for attending.
A number of sessions during the workshop will focus on five main topics; (i) Knowledge Exchange and Information Sharing; (ii) Current and Potential Technological Solutions (Smarter Houses and Smarter Cities, Green Infrastructure, Low Carbon Urban Infrastructure Solution); (iii) Building Envelopes and Renewable Energy; (iv) Case Studies from both sides on Policy, Urban Planning and potential solutions and (v) Future collaborations.
During the workshop we will create a working group of participants and develop a dedicated blog, to share their relevant research findings. All participants will have access to a mentor during and after the workshop.

HOW TO APPLY
Researchers, Representatives, Planners and Policy Makers from the UK and Turkey are invited to apply to attend the workshop. We are inviting researchers with experience in the following domains: Sustainable Infrastructure, Urban Planning and Design, Low-Carbon Technologies, Alternative Materials and Construction.
Applicants are required to submit an application form, along with a short position paper/statement of research (max 2 pages). Your submission must be in PDF format with all fonts embedded, and be formatted according to IEEE 8.5x11 conference format, and formatted in accordance with the IEEE Computer Society author guidelines.
Successful applicants will receive expenses covering travel and accommodation expenses incurred for attending the conference. This stipend is provide by the Newton Researcher Links grant.
The organisation will select 17 Participants from UK and 17 from Turkey. The selection criteria are:
- Less than 10 years since being awarded the PhD
- Experience and relevance of the applicant's research area to the workshop
- Motivation and contribution to the aims of the workshop
- Long term impact expected through the participation in the workshop
- Ability to disseminate workshop's outcomes
- Participants must have a research or academic position.

Engineering & Computing Building
This building was completed in 2012 and is used solely by our Faculty of Engineering, Environment and Computing. The £50m project delivered a highly sustainable building that uses a range of technologies including rainwater harvesting, solar thermal energy and biomass boilers. Facilities include a high precision wind-tunnel, a £3m high-performance engineering centre, a Harrier Jump Jet, three flight simulators and the UK’s largest magnet.
