Event details

Sometimes we can be given the impression that religion and violence go hand-in-hand. On other occasions we might hear that all of the world's religions preach peace. The truth, however, is probably somewhere in-between. People of faith can encourage violence but faith can also be at the heart of peacebuilding as Chris Shannahan and Laura Payne showed in their 2016 report ‘Faith-based Interventions in Peace, Violence and Conflict'.

This meeting of the Faith and Peaceful Relations Forum, ‘Swords into Ploughshares?’ will explore this tension and reflect on some of the ways in which faith groups can contribute to conflict prevention and peacebuilding. Lucy Salek from Islamic Relief and Laura Payne from the Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations will share their experiences and reflections with us as we ask how faith groups can help to build peace here in Coventry.

Lucy is currently working with Islamic Relief Worldwide as a Senior Advisor on Conflict Transformation & Fragile States, covering both Policy & Programmes. Lucy is responsible for how Islamic Relief implements and develops best practice related to development and humanitarian activities in fragile or conflict-affected locations.  She works closely with operational offices in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, to train staff and develop effective programming.

Laura is a Research Fellow at Coventry University’s Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations, her work investigates the contributions of local actors in efforts to prevent violent conflict. She works with civil society groups, churches and mosques to identify forms of conflict prevention that build on local people’s existing capabilities and grounded understanding.  Previously Laura was the institutional lead for peacebuilding for the Anglican Alliance, an international development and advocacy organisation working with local church partners in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
