SURGE: Nuffield Funded Project

Professor Paul Bywaters , Dr Geraldine Brady (SURGE) and Professor Tim Sparks (SIGMA), have been successful in their proposal to the Nuffield Foundation. The team, along with Elizabeth Bos, are beginning a project which explores ‘Deprivation and Children’s Services Outcomes: what can mapping Looked After Children and children on Child Protection plans tell us?’.  Information from 15 local authorities covering more than 10% of all children in contact with children’s services in England will be collected. By examining data routinely collected by Local Authorities the team aim to explore links between children who are subject to safeguarding processes and Index of Multiple Deprivation scores.  The research will fill a gap in published information about children in contact with Children’s Services. The findings are likely to have relevance for Local Authorities in terms of intervention strategies, allocation of resources and workforce skills and development.
