The first in a new generation of higher education institutions designed to meet the changing realities of modern lives is launched in Coventry today (Monday 17th October).

A creative re-working of the university offering, the Coventry University Coventry will provide "life-shaped learning", running seven days a week (7am-10pm weekdays; 7am-4pm weekends), providing the same university-standard teaching and learning in flexible bursts and at a lower cost (a maximum of £4,800 for full-time students studying for a degree).

The new college is aimed at students in the region concerned at taking on debts to fund higher education, and helping employees combine everyday work routines with gaining the higher skills needed by the UK economy and to secure jobs. All the college students will be able to continue with part-time or full-time jobs, living at home and keeping up with other family responsibilities, while equipping themselves with higher level qualifications.

Courses are to be offered through UCAS from October 17th, with a focus on professional subjects such as Business, Finance, Accounting, Law, IT, Marketing and Sales - each starting in September 2012.

Professor Madeleine Atkins, Vice-Chancellor of Coventry University, said:

"Coventry University has a long tradition of innovation, and the college is another way in which we are responding to the government's call for fresh thinking, providing new ways to support the local and regional economy and the drive for up-skilling employees.

"Coventry University Coventry will offer a refreshingly straightforward approach to higher education. The timetable is designed to allow the student to hold down a job simultaneously with study or to combine study with domestic responsibilities or other lifestyle choices. Courses will deliver an intense, highly-structured, taught learning experience."

A chief executive (John Dishman from Leeds Metropolitan University) will be in position from November 1st 2011, and a recruitment campaign for other new posts at the college is now underway.

The college will be located alongside Coventry University in the city centre, close to bus and train stations, and with ample parking provided.

An open day is to be held on November 5th at Coventry University.
