Finn Lortan's design saw him named Young Designer of the Year by BOAT International
Wednesday 25 February 2026
A stunning open-plan yacht design saw a Coventry University student named BOAT International’s Young Designer of the Year.
Finn Lortan, who studies Automotive and Transport Design, was praised by a judging panel of acclaimed yacht designers for the quality and detail of his development sketches and explanatory drawings.

The competition brief was to design a 60-metre day boat called the Amiche, capable of entertaining 20 guests, including two family cabins and extensive entertainment facilities.
More than 160 young designers entered the competition, run in association with superyacht builder and designer Feadship, with Finn, who is from South Africa, ultimately winning the prestigious title from an exceptionally competitive field of entries.

A key part of the design is the creation of one unified entertainment area, rather than spreading guests out across a number of floors elevating the connection of the space. It also features an integrated spa with opening beach decks, making more efficient use of the space to become one big open floor plan.
Another requirement was to locate an owner’s cabin in an area with good sea views, that didn’t suffer from significant ocean roll. The end result was the owner’s cabin located on the upper deck, positioned on a gyro-floor system to ensure it remains steady.
I’m thrilled to have won this competition - it’s amazing to see my work exhibited on this scale with an organisation with such a massive reach within the industry. I fell in love with boat design through two main events. The first being the time I spent doing my deck hand course, learning all about the maintenance and procedures of operating these machines. The second was a five month boat design internship done at Du Toit Yacht Design in Cape Town, who taught me the fundamentals of how to correctly design and construct these products. - they are complex things to design and offer some unique challenges.
At Coventry University, I think the most important thing has been the links it has to the industry and the opportunities it provides to speak to design professionals. It is my dream to work in yacht design, I am very grateful for the platform this has given me to get my work noticed.
