A nursing graduate from Coventry University has penned a new book designed to provide practical advice for anyone considering a career in nursing or making their first steps in the profession.
Through My Nursing Eyes: The Real Story of Becoming Nurse Me has been written by Samantha Ntegwep, 25, who graduated from Coventry University’s Adult Nursing course in 2024.
Samantha hopes her new book will support students and recent graduates with honest insight, reassurance and guidance at a demanding stage of their careers.
It highlights the emotional, academic and practical realities that many nursing students face as they begin their journey in the workplace.
Samantha works as a nurse at University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust and says she is happy to be serving her local community.
I’ve been writing a journal of my experiences since I started my course at Coventry University and I thought as well as telling my story, a book would be able to provide lots of practical tips for anyone considering a career in nursing.
It’s intended to help those still at school, current nursing students and those just starting in their career, so among other things it offers advice on what subjects you might want to consider studying, what to expect at your placements, the different types of nursing available and the kinds of shifts you can do.
When I first started I was very focused on the grades but I came to realise that grades are not everything, it’s about how well you look after your patients and how well you do on placements.
Nursing is a wonderful career but sometimes just being caring is not enough, you need to develop emotional resilience, be motivated and hard working.
I really liked my time studying at Coventry University and in my third year I enjoyed passing on my advice to some of the first and second year students. There would be certain questions that students asked quite often and it’s those kind of things I’ve included in my book. I want it to be something people can keep with them as a bit of a reference.
