Game makers of the future will look to level up at Coventry University as it welcomes the first students on its Games Studio Development master’s degree course.

The course has been co-developed by, and will be co-delivered in collaboration with, the Utopian Game Labs Academy (UGLA) whose founders have worked on many original games and titles from Star Wars to Peppa Pig. The course has been designed to develop talent from a range of areas including design, engineering, writing, marketing, art and business backgrounds who are interested in applying their skills in the context of games.

We are excited to work with UGLA on this innovative approach to developing talent for the games industry. Not only has this course been co-developed with them but we will be working together to deliver the course to our students.

Because of its location near Leamington Spa, which is a hub of activity for the industry, Coventry University is well-positioned to work with the games industry - and with this collaboration our students will benefit from real-world industry engagement and collaboration from the get-go.

Dr Bianca Wright, Curriculum Lead: Creative Technologies

The UGLA is part of Utopian Games Lab, the developer currently working on Time Raiders which is set to become the first Play-To-Earn game of its kind - a treasure hunt looter shooter with a time travel theme. The company is also behind games such as Doctor Who: Return to Earth, Scooby-Doo: Frights, Camera, Action, High School Musical, Peppa Pig and Walking with Dinosaurs.

The industry-facing course aims to provide students with the skills and experience for a career in developing video games as they have the opportunity to work with UGLA on the development of a games project as part of their learning.

Aspiring developers face a big hurdle in the intricacies of production. It's easy to misstep at various stages of a long, iterative process in ways that make a game a nightmare to complete, and we in the industry have done a disservice in not sharing our knowledge to help aspiring developers accomplish their goals.

We are proud to contribute to positive change for the benefit of industry and aspirants alike. We look forward to working with every student on the course and fulfilling the industry's needs together.

Luke Richards, Lead Designer of UGLA
