Course overview

This course offers advanced academic study of English literature and language, and gives you the knowledge-base necessary to become an effective instructor and manager in a variety of education settings.

You will hone your critical and analytical skills through exploring the stylistic features of the English language, discussing major English literature themes and authors in relation to sustainability and environmental issues, engaging with the theory and practice of teaching English to speakers of other languages and approaching key issues in education management.

  • You will practise microteaching and discuss innovative teaching theory and practice.
  • You will also have the opportunity to gain a recognised professional teaching qualification1: the Teaching Knowledge Test accredited by Cambridge Assessment English, as part of the module Professional Enhancement: Managing the Teaching and Learning Process (Please note that you must be studying on-campus in the UK to take this test.)
  • You will have the option to apply for a ‘professional experience’ opportunity,2 designed to further develop your skills and knowledge with the aim of maximising your employability prospects. See modules for more information.

What you'll study

This MA course has been designed to enhance your knowledge of English language and literature, while at the same time providing you with the opportunity to engage with education management and develop your skills in teaching English to speakers of other languages. The course should stand you in good stead for the purpose of becoming an effective instructor or manager in a range of education settings.

Through the range of modules offered on this course, you’ll develop skills at teaching English to speakers of other languages, and explore key themes in education management theory and practice. You’ll also undertake stylistic and literary analysis of English texts, honing your analytical skills. You’ll encounter major themes in English literature through a focus on environmental issues and ecocriticism, engaging with cutting-edge critical theories and considering the importance of literature for the regional and global concerns of the twenty-first century.


  • This is a practical module that introduces you to the teaching, learning and assessment of English in a variety of settings. You will engage in peer reviews and observations of teaching and microteaching sessions. You will reflect on the principles underpinning pedagogic planning, practise session plan design, deliver your teaching plan and evaluate it after your taught session. You will learn how to support students both face-to-face and online and to give effective and consistent feedback.


  • This module aims to examine how literature can support the teaching of the English language. It provides suggestions for fostering language development and communicative competence by integrating literature into the English language classroom. You will discuss the existing body of theoretical research as well as analyse concepts and issues related to the teaching of literature and to the teaching of language through literature.


  • This module aims to introduce you to the principles and practice of education management, leadership and administration in a variety of educational settings, including the Higher Education setting. The module will develop your understanding of programme management processes and their implementation within an organisational setting.


  • This module aims to prepare you for managing programmes in educational organisations. The module will develop your understanding of project and programme management processes and their implementation within an organisational setting. The module will also introduce you to several Project Management (PM) methodologies and case studies and enable you to evaluate PM methodologies and their implementation in an organisational setting.


  • This module deals with stylistics, a field of study in which linguistic theories are used to identify and describe the distinguishing features (or style) of a text. Analysing style involves looking closely and systematically at the formal features of a text and then considering how those features affect and contribute to the meaning and interpretation of the text in question. This module equips you with an understanding of the linguistic models and analytic techniques that can be used to describe, analyse and interpret a range of literary, as well as non-literary, texts.


  • This module introduces you to the key theoretical concepts and texts relating to literary utopia and dystopia. You will learn to critically assess utopian and dystopian components in fiction and philosophy. You will examine how utopian and dystopian ideas intersect with concepts such as gender, violence, or technophobia and technophilia, and how they influence contexts such as architecture, the environment, communities or bureaucracy. Theoretical sessions will contextualise and historicise the evolution of utopian and dystopian literature, and will include close readings of utopian and dystopian literary texts.


  • This module provides a sound basis to support you in the undertaking of a substantial research project appropriate to Master’s level, in terms of the identification of a topic and the development of an appropriate research strategy for its completion. You will learn how to retrieve, annotate and discuss appropriate sources and how to collect, classify and analyse primary and secondary data. The module will also cover how to adhere to academic writing standards and ethics requirements and how to avoid plagiarism.


  • This module supports you in the undertaking of a substantial research project appropriate to Master’s level, in terms of the identification of a topic, the development of an appropriate research strategy for its development and completion, and its final writing up as a dissertation. In the second part of the module, you will be expected to produce an original piece of extended writing with the support of your allocated supervisor.


  • The aim of this module is to discuss the key principles underlying managing the teaching and learning process, including language classroom management. You will study issues relating to learner language and teacher language and investigate how the language used by a teacher can affect learners’ behaviour. The module will also help you to understand how to manage an ELT classroom in various contexts and with learners of different abilities.


With professional experience option

The professional experience opportunity2 enables you the opportunity to apply for optional professional experience in semester 1, which, upon successfully securing an opportunity, will extend the duration of your master’s to either 16, 20 or 24 months. The professional experience provides an opportunity for you to develop expertise and experience in your chosen field with the aim of enhancing your employability.

Please note that the optional professional experience modules incur an additional tuition fee, which for 1 semester of professional experience is £1,333.33, for 2 semesters of professional experience is £2,666.67, and for 3 semesters of professional experience is £4,000.

Professional experience may also be subject to additional costs, visa requirements being met, subject to availability and/or competitive application. This course can be offered on a part-time basis. Whilst we would like to give you all the information about our part-time offering here, it is tailored for each course each year depending on the number of part-time applicants. Teaching contact hours

The number of full-time contact hours may vary from semester to semester, however, on average, it is likely to be around 12 contact hours per week.

Additionally, you will be expected to undertake significant self-directed study of approximately 35 hours each week, depending on the demands of individual modules.

The contact hours may be made up of a combination of face-to-face teaching, individual and group tutorials, and online classes and tutorials.

As an innovative and enterprising institution, the university may seek to utilise emerging technologies within the student experience. For all courses (whether on-campus, blended, or distance learning), the university may deliver certain contact hours and assessments via online technologies and methods.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are prepared for courses due to start in or after the 2023/2024 academic year to be delivered in a variety of forms. The form of delivery will be determined in accordance with Government and Public Health guidance. Whether on campus or online, our key priority is staff and student safety.

  • We carry out an initial fee status assessment based on the information you provide in your application. Your fee status determines your tuition fees, and what financial support and scholarships may be available to you. The rules about who pays UK (home) or international (overseas) fees for higher education courses in England are set by the government's Department for Education. The regulations identify all the different categories of student who can insist on paying the home rate. The regulations can be difficult to understand, so the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) has provided fee status guidance to help you identify whether you are eligible to pay the home or overseas rate.

Students will benefit from studying on our well-equipped, modern campus. The Faculty of Arts and Humanities is joining two of our school’s completely refurbished Art and Design buildings and adding a range of new facilities, which is planned to fully open in 2023. This course equips you with the skills you need to enter this dynamic, growing sector, either as an educator skilled in classroom management and innovative teaching techniques, or as an effective education manager.

Successful completion of this course can also lead to a variety of careers associated with teaching English to speakers of other languages, or the use of English language and literature, including academic consultancy, journalism, information management and human resources, among others.

    3Tuition fees

    The University will charge the tuition fees that are stated in the above table for the first Academic Year of study. The University will review tuition fees each year. For Home Students, if Parliament permit an increase in tuition fees, the University may increase fees for each subsequent year of study in line with any such changes. Note that any increase is expected to be in line with inflation.

    For International Students, we may increase fees each year but such increases will be no more than 5% above inflation. If you defer your course start date or have to extend your studies beyond the normal duration of the course (e.g. to repeat a year or resit examinations) the University reserves the right to charge you fees at a higher rate and/or in accordance with any legislative changes during the additional period of study.


    Due to COVID-19, some facilities (including some teaching and learning spaces) and some non-academic offerings (particularly in relation to international experiences), may vary from those advertised and may have reduced availability or restrictions on their use.
