This module aims to build upon students’ pre-existing knowledge and skills in their own specific clinical speciality by introducing them to the various aspects of critical care nursing.
The module will focus on the development of students’ theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
Students will be given the opportunity to explore and critically analyse the evidence base of critical care in order to develop clear understanding of this specialist subject area.
This module provides students with the opportunity to:
- Gain valuable knowledge within the field of critical care nursing.
- Attend clinical placements within a real critical care environment.
- Gather evidence towards the achievement of the Knowledge and Skills Framework core dimensions: Communication, Personal and People Development, Service Improvement, Equality and Diversity.

On successful completion of this module you should be able to:
- Apply the pathophysiological processes of disease to the management of patients’ specific critical illnesses.
- Evaluate the psychological and sociological impact of critical illness on the patient, their families and the nursing staff.
- Evaluate the role of healthcare professionals in providing critical and rehabilitative care for patients within a multi-disciplinary environment.
- Note the key practical and observational skills used by nursing staff in the critical care environment.
- Apply theoretical knowledge and clinical skills within a critical care environment.

How will this course be taught
This module will be delivered through a combination of lectures, debates, discussions, workshops, presentations and seminars. Some sessions may be shared with modules of similar clinical content.
Autumn term: Wednesdays 1pm - 5pm.
Induction will take place on the first day of each module (excluding Mentoring).

- Registered Healthcare professional with the NMC/HPC.
- At least six months of critical care experience.
- Ability to study at level 3.
- Ability to complete a set number of clinical placement hours within critical care clinical areas.
- Coursework 1: 2500 word Essay (100% of module mark)
- Coursework 2: 1000 word Portfolio
