Coventry University and Midlands Business Insider Magazine hosted a roundtable discussion, exploring how artificial intelligence (AI) and data can deliver beneficial business impacts across a range of industry sectors.

The event brought together leaders from innovative organisations to discuss how AI is already influencing and accelerating their operations - and what steps are needed to scale its impact responsibly and effectively.

Chaired by Ian Griffin, Midlands Deputy Editor at Business Insider, the discussion took place at Coventry University’s Delia Derbyshire building and focused on emerging opportunities, practical applications and the cultural shift needed to make the most of AI and data.

Discussions explored how AI can enhance patient care in the NHS – from getting the right medication to heart attack patients faster, to improving vehicle safety by detecting when drivers need to take a break.

A key theme throughout was the importance of workplace culture and skills development, with panellists agreeing that AI should be seen as a tool to support employees and not replace their jobs.

Creating the right environment, investing in training and recognising where AI can complement human abilities were seen as essential to successful adoption.

Discussions also focused on how business leaders can address skills gaps and ease concerns by showing how AI can enhance roles and help people benefit from efficiency improvements.

Representing Coventry University were James Shuttleworth, Associate Director of the Digital Insight and Future Skills Unit, and Professor James Brusey from the Research Centre for Computational Science and Mathematical Modelling. They shared insights into the university’s research on data-driven decision-making, digital transformation, and workforce development.

Guest contributors included representatives from Qinetiq, Horiba Mira, Bosch Rexroth, National Grid and Data Duopoly, alongside local SMEs and innovation consultancies, who offered sector-specific insights from healthcare, manufacturing, professional services and infrastructure.

The roundtable was a great opportunity to explore how AI can bring both immediate improvements and longer-term benefits to businesses. The discussions made clear that success depends not just on the technology, but on building the right skills, culture and understanding across organisations.
