At Coventry University, our Forensic Investigations BSc (Hons) course offers far more than traditional crime scene work. It immerses you in the rapidly expanding world of digital forensics and cybercrime investigation. As current students, we've experienced first-hand how the course blends practical skills, modern technology and real investigative techniques to prepare us for future careers.

Digital forensics

One of the best things about our course is how digital forensics is incorporated throughout our studies. Digital forensics is the process of collecting and analysing digital evidence while maintaining its integrity and admissibility in court, and is increasingly important in both civil and criminal investigations worldwide. With cybercrime rising, universities across the UK (including Coventry University) are adapting their forensic and investigative courses to reflect this changing landscape.

Learning about fraud and financial investigations

From day one, we learn how fraud affects individuals, businesses and government organisations, and how digital evidence plays a key role in uncovering the perpetrators and victims. Our modules guide us through financial profiling, analysing bank statements and understanding account structures, but we also develop the essential digital skills needed in modern investigations.

Ethical hacking in secure lab environments

Another big part of the course is our exposure to ethical hacking. In our isolated lab environments (completely secure from outside networks), we learn the same techniques used by cybersecurity professionals to identify vulnerabilities and understand cybercriminal behaviour. These sessions improve our technical abilities and help us understand the complexities of cybercrime investigations.

Virtual reality crime scene training

We also get hands-on experience with virtual reality (VR) technology. VR headsets let us step inside simulated crime scenes and courtroom environments, giving us a realistic sense of investigation procedures and evidence presentation. This approach aims to boost our confidence and competence in real-world scenarios.

Investigating mobile, cloud and network evidence

The rise of mobile devices, advanced networks and cloud technology means digital forensics now spans far beyond computers. According to definitions from IBM and NIST, digital forensics includes investigations involving mobile devices, networks, cloud data and encrypted systems, and our course reflects this breadth. We explore how these technologies can contain crucial evidence and how forensic professionals retrieve, preserve and analyse data while ensuring accuracy and legal admissibility.
