Introduction
Results day didn’t go as planned for me. I hadn’t originally applied to Coventry University, and both my firm and insurance choices were different institutions. Like many students, I expected things to go a certain way, but I found out I hadn’t been accepted into either.
That moment brought a lot of uncertainty. Suddenly, I was trying to figure out my next step without really knowing what options were still available, or whether I could still study the course I genuinely wanted.
Clearing wasn’t something I had prepared for, but it quickly became my route forward.
Taking a step back
There can be lots of pressure that comes with results day, whether it’s from family, friends, or your own expectations. You feel like you’re supposed to have everything figured out immediately, even when you’re still processing what’s happened.
At one point, I remember thinking, “As long as I get into any university, that’s enough.” But after stepping back, I realised I didn’t want to compromise on what I was going to study. I wanted a course that matched my interests and felt right for my future.
Talking things through with my dad also really helped. He helped me stay calm and approach things more logically rather than reacting to the pressure of the moment.
Finding the right course through Clearing
After getting home, I started exploring my options through Clearing. The most important factor to me was the course itself. Computer systems engineering is quite specific, and I noticed that a lot of universities offered similar subjects, but combined with other areas. I only wanted a course that focused on exactly what I was interested in.
That’s when I came across Coventry University.
It stood out straight away because it offered my course as a dedicated programme. On top of that, the location made sense for me since I commute from Birmingham, and the travel options were manageable.
I decided to call the university, explained my situation and the grades I had achieved, and the process was surprisingly smooth. After going through a few formalities, I received an offer very quickly, which brought a sense of clarity to a rough day.

Making the decision
A couple of days after results day, my dad and I attended an Open Day at Coventry University. We spoke with the course lead, looked around the department, and got a real feel for the environment. The facilities, the structure of the course, and the overall atmosphere all felt right. By the end of the visit, the decision felt much more certain.
I had originally planned to move out for university and live independently. But after everything that happened, I had to rethink that. Choosing Coventry University meant staying at home and commuting.
In the end, this worked well for me. It allowed me to focus on studying the right course in the right environment, while also keeping a practical setup that suited my situation.

Reflecting on the choice
Now, I can confidently say that it was the right decision to come to Coventry University. Clearing wasn’t something I originally planned for, but it led me to a course and university that genuinely suit me. It’s hard to imagine what things would have been like if I had rushed into a different decision.
What I enjoy most about studying here
One of the best aspects of studying Computer Systems Engineering MEng/BEng (Hons) at Coventry University has been the support from the department.
The class sizes are relatively small, which means lecturers actually get to know you — your strengths, your progress, and when you might need support.
That level of interaction creates a much more supportive and comfortable learning environment. It gives you a sense of reassurance, knowing that help is always available when you need it.
Final advice
If you’re going through Clearing, don’t panic. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed, but try not to rush into a decision just for the sake of securing a place. Focus on what you actually want to study, and if you can, attend open days and speak to staff to get a real feel for the course and university.
Try not to let outside pressure influence your choice too much – this is your decision, and it should work for your future.
Clearing might not be part of your original plan, but it can still lead to the right outcome if you stay focused and make thoughtful choices based on what matters most to you.
