Thinking of changing university? Here's what to consider before making the move

Sometimes it takes real experience to understand whether you've chosen the right university.

Perhaps the course isn't what you expected. Maybe the way you're being taught doesn't suit how you learn best. Or perhaps you're looking for more support, different opportunities or a university experience that feels like a better fit.

Whatever your reason, it's important to know that changing universities is more common than many students realise.

What should you think about before switching universities?

Is it the course, or the university?

One of the first questions to ask yourself is what's driving your desire for change.

Sometimes the issue is the subject itself. Other times, it's the teaching approach, the learning environment, the support available or the opportunities that sit beyond your studies.

Taking time to identify what's not working can help you make a more informed decision about what you need from your next university experience.

Does the learning experience suit you?

Every student learns differently.

At Coventry University, many courses use block learning, allowing students to focus on one subject at a time rather than studying multiple modules simultaneously.

Combined with active and applied learning, this approach encourages students to develop their knowledge through projects, practical activities and real-world challenges.

If your current learning experience isn't helping you perform at your best, exploring different approaches to teaching and learning could be worth considering.

What support will help you succeed?

Support can play a significant role in helping students make the most of their studies and university life. For some students considering a switch, the level of academic, personal or wellbeing support available can be just as important as the course itself.

At Coventry University, every student is assigned a qualified Success Coach who remains a consistent point of contact throughout their student journey.

From settling in and accessing specialist support to exploring placements and future career plans, Success Coaches help students navigate university life and make the most of the opportunities available to them.

Are your studies helping you build towards your future?

University is about more than earning a degree. It's also about preparing for what comes next.

That's why it's important to consider the opportunities available beyond the classroom.

Our students can access careers support throughout their studies, alongside opportunities to gain practical experience through projects, placements and industry-informed learning.

Students can also engage with Phoenix+, our personal and professional development programme, designed to help build skills, confidence and experiences that support future career ambitions..

Changing universities doesn't have to be complicated

One of the biggest misconceptions about transferring universities is that the process will be difficult.

In reality, many students are surprised by how straightforward it can be.

The first step isn't withdrawing from your current university. It's understanding what options may be available.

Our team can help you understand the options available, explain any requirements and discuss the next steps based on your circumstances.

Worried about student finance?

One of the biggest questions students have about switching universities is how it might affect their funding.

In many cases, students who have recently started their first undergraduate degree would be expected to have sufficient funding entitlement remaining to continue their studies.

Every situation is different, however, and Student Finance England will assess your individual circumstances.

Before making any decisions, it's worth checking your Student Finance account and understanding how a move could affect your funding.

If you're looking to switch and start between 1 January 2027 and 31 August 2027, you may be eligible for the Government's new Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE). Find out more here.

What if you're considering switching after your first or second year?

Not every student considers changing universities within their first few weeks. Sometimes it takes longer to realise your course, university experience, or future goals don’t quite align with what you're looking for.

If you've already completed part of your degree, it may still be possible to transfer. Whether you can join the same year of a course or need to repeat some study will depend on factors such as your previous modules, academic performance, and the course you're looking to join.

Funding and entry requirements can also vary for students further along in their studies, so it's important to understand your options before you decide.

Our team can talk through your individual circumstances and help you understand what routes may be available.
