Introduction to the Black Interns Project (BIP)

Launched in January 2022, Coventry University Group’s Black Interns Project (BIP) is designed to address the lack of cultural diversity in the UK workforce. The initiative provides paid internships and placements for students identifying as Black Caribbean, Black African, Black British or of mixed Black heritage, helping them to start their professional careers.

Black Interns Project (BIP) success

Since its inception, BIP has engaged over 2,000 students, with 62% of participants being postgraduate and 38% undergraduate students. The project's success is driven by partnerships with major brands like Kellanova (formerly Kelloggs), Ralph Lauren and Morgan Stanley, as well as innovative organisations such as Vanguard Economics, Playground Games and more. These collaborations have facilitated up to 50 placements in the past year, many of which have transitioned into full-time positions.

Hilda Adun, Project Manager at Coventry University Group, leads the Black Interns Project. She has years of experience in marketing and business strategy across Africa, India and the UK, and a key aspect of her role is to collaborate with employers, strategic partners, students and wider stakeholders to gain their support and successfully deliver the project.

Hilda's thoughts about addressing inequality in the workforce

On the importance of university-led programmes that actively address inequality in the workforce, Hilda said:

"Universities play a crucial role in preparing students for the workforce, and initiatives like BIP are essential to fostering a more inclusive future. Data on employment disparities highlight significant challenges for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) individuals.

By creating targeted opportunities for Black students, this project helps dismantle barriers to entry in fields where they have historically been underrepresented. It also highlights their achievements, contributing to the broader efforts of promoting diversity and challenging stereotypes in various industries.

The success stories from BIP are a testament to the value of these opportunities. Students who have navigated challenges and secured full-time roles through the programme demonstrate the profound impact that structured support and representation can have on professional development.

Beyond securing placements, we provide crucial support throughout the application and interview process. The guidance offered ensures that students are well-prepared to succeed, leading to a range of positive outcomes. The ongoing engagement with employers continues to broaden the scope of opportunities available, further strengthening the career prospects of participating students.

The Black Interns Project stands as a vital contribution towards creating a more diverse and equitable workforce. By offering consistent guidance and opportunities to gain meaningful work experience for its Black students, Coventry University Group is playing an instrumental role in shaping a future where diversity is not only recognised but embraced across all sectors.”
