Lecturers from Coventry University are preparing to swap the classroom for the heights of one of the city’s most iconic landmarks as they take on a daring 90-foot abseil down Coventry Cathedral to raise money for The Myton Hospices.

The event, taking place on 27 September, is part of a wider fundraising effort aiming to raise more than £60,000 for the local charity, which provides compassionate end-of-life care and support for patients and their families.

So far, the Nursing Associates teaching team - including Donna Royle, Laura O'Brien, Jess Waldron, Karen Heywood, Carolyn Letchford, Kay Blackmore and Hayley Scutts - have raised £1,800.

For Donna Royle, Nursing Associate Lecturer and Admissions Tutor, the challenge is personal as she faces her fear of heights.

The fear is real - we’re all asking ourselves why we agreed to this!

I can’t believe I’m going to abseil off the cathedral, but I keep telling the team, it’s easier than running a 5k!

Donna Royle, Nursing Associate Lecturer and Admissions Tutor

The team’s motivation stems from their professional and personal experiences with end-of-life care. Two members have worked with The Myton Hospices, and many have seen the impact of its services first-hand.

The Myton Hospices mean a great deal to our team - personally and professionally. Each of us has been touched by their work, whether through support for loved ones, collaboration or caring for patients with similar needs.

As nurses, nursing associates and midwives, we understand the importance of quality end-of-life care. Myton provides a homely, supportive environment where people can die with dignity, while also supporting their families. It’s especially important to support them now, as we honour the compassion and care they offer during life’s most difficult moments.

Donna is fundraising in memory of her uncle and hopes the team’s efforts will raise awareness and vital funds for Myton, which relies heavily on donations.

We’re a close-knit team, and we believe a team that raises money together stays together. This is our way of giving back to a charity that means so much to us and to Coventry.

Also taking part is Chloe Hollingsworth, Course Director for Fashion, Brand and Communication, who recently completed a half-marathon.

I’m a little nervous as I’ve never done anything like this before, but I’m excited to challenge myself. I hope my fundraising helps make someone’s life more comfortable and encourages others to support this amazing cause.
