The Kazakhstan Minister of Science and Higher Education met senior leaders during a visit to Coventry University's city centre campus
Friday 23 January 2026
Coventry University Group plans to open a second campus in Kazakhstan following the success of its first base in Astana.
Coventry University Kazakhstan opened its doors in 2024, becoming the first British university in the capital city, and has since seen its numbers grow rapidly, with ambitious plans to expand in the country to teach 3,500 students.
A second campus is now planned in the southern city of Almaty, which will once again be a partnership with Primus Education LLP. The plans were given the full support of Sayasat Nurbek, the Kazakhstan Minister of Science and Higher Education, during a visit to Coventry University’s city centre campus in the UK.
We opened the first branch campus of Coventry University in Kazakhstan in 2024 and it has been a major success. There has been a lot of attention on the country and the region with applications from Uzbekistan, China, France and Russia.
We fully support a second branch campus for Coventry University in Kazakhstan and I really enjoyed our visit to Coventry where we were given a glimpse of the investment that has gone into engineering.
Kazakhstan is also part of the first cohort of OpenAI’s Education for Countries which is working to bring AI into education systems to aid both students and staff.
Sayasat Nurbek, Kazakhstan Minister of Science and Higher Education
Mr Nurbek was given a tour of the university’s industry-standard engineering facilities including full-motion aircraft simulators, wind tunnel, Power Wall and the Harrier Jump Jet.
We met with leaders and companies in Almaty which is more industrious than Astana and has good links to China, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. We will be able to help with electrical engineering, construction management, artificial intelligence and civil engineering, as well as encouraging companies from Central Asia to come to us. It is our ambition to establish a leading British university focusing on engineering and artificial intelligence in Central Asia.
Coventry University Kazakhstan is growing very rapidly. We started with 95 students and are now at 428. Our students are really talented and 95% received offers from foreign universities but came to us with the chance to study in Kazakhstan.
Our faculty is growing and they have experience with other universities, publications in journals and we will soon have our first patent for Coventry University Kazakhstan.
This is what we have done in just 21 months and we also want to expand in Astana and be the only institution with campuses in two cities.
Dr Miras Daulenov, President of Coventry University Kazakhstan
It was a pleasure to welcome the Minister to our city centre campus and build upon the strong relationship that Coventry University already shares with the Kazakhstan government.
Opening a second campus in Kazakhstan will allow more and more talented people to benefit from our high-quality teaching as we continue creating better futures for students right across the globe.
