Coventry University’s striking Delia Derbyshire building has been awarded a prestigious architecture award, following its transformation last year.
The Delia Derbyshire building has been named the Royal Institute of British Architects West Midlands Building of the Year.
Housing Coventry University’s College of Arts and Society, the project saw the Maurice Foss and Graham Sutherland buildings extensively renovated and linked together, before being renamed as the Delia Derbyshire building in honour of the Coventry-born electronic music pioneer.
Designed by architects BDP, it features flexible learning spaces, cutting-edge immersive media studios, a lecture theatre, a Hyperstudio hosting large-scale projects and numerous studios, labs and workshop areas.
It houses a gallery, a cafe and an events atrium, all of which are open to the public and where students, staff and visiting artists can showcase their work to the community.
We are incredibly proud of this unique learning environment, the transformation of these buildings into the striking modern structure you see today has been an amazing effort by our university and BDP so we’re thrilled to see that recognised by RIBA.
Standing in the heart of Coventry and paying tribute to, Delia Derbyshire, a technological innovator and pioneering creative, we know this wonderful setting will serve to inspire future generations of artists and creatives.
Dr Shaun Hides, Academic Dean at Coventry University’s College of the Arts & Society
Coventry University is incredibly proud of its history and of its place in the city and we are so honoured to have been able to contribute to the rejuvenation of its site and its connection with local people and local creative business.
The Delia Derbyshire building is a worthy winner of the RIBA building of the year award. It is a project that proves the efficacy of building refurbishments whilst raising the profile and the capability of the college and the university, creating some of the best learning and social environments in the country.
