Coventry University has unveiled three major initiatives designed to make Artificial Intelligence (AI) accessible, responsible, and transformative by connecting discovery, deployment, and education for the sectors.

Together, the AI Skills Academy, the AI Adoption Lab, and the Coventry Centre for Doctoral Training (C-CDT) in AI will accelerate the UK’s capacity to learn, innovate, and lead in the age of AI.

We’re building an AI ecosystem where research, skills, and innovation converge.

Students learn alongside practitioners; researchers co-create with industry; and communities shape the tools that will define their futures. This is AI as collaboration, not consumption.

Professor Elena Gaura, Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research)

AI Skills Academy: Building a Future-Ready Workforce

The AI Skills Academy bridges the AI capability gap across industry, government, and education.

Aligned with the Alan Turing Institute’s AI Skills for Business Competency Framework, it delivers bite-sized learning, CPD pathways, bootcamps, and executive education that help professionals integrate AI confidently and ethically into their work.

Courses are co-created with employers in sectors such as energy, healthcare, automotive, and public services, ensuring that skills training meets real-world demand.

AI Adoption Lab: Turning Ideas into Impact

The AI Adoption Lab is Coventry University’s hands-on innovation space, working as a bridge between academic expertise and industrial need.

It helps partners design, test, and deploy AI solutions through proof-of-concept projects, testbeds, and expert coaching, supported by access to secure compute, data environments, and innovation vouchers.

From energy analytics to healthcare diagnostics, the Lab transforms promising ideas into deployable products, supporting the West Midlands’ ambition to become the UK’s most trusted and vibrant AI hub.

Through initiatives such as the AI Adoption Lab and Skills Academy, we’re giving the regional and national workforce the tools and confidence to apply AI with purpose and impact.

Coventry Centre for Doctoral Training in AI: Creating AI Leaders for a Responsible Future

The Coventry Centre for Doctoral Training (C-CDT) in AI is an independently funded doctoral hub uniting more than 60 PhD researchers from across disciplines.

It ensures every AI-driven PhD project is grounded in rigorous AI methodologies, ethics, and reproducibility.

With specialist supervision, shared GPU infrastructure, and access to our Human-Centred AI Transdisciplinary Network (100+ researchers across 20 disciplines), the C-CDT students develop both deep technical expertise and the broader societal understanding required to lead AI responsibly.

A Whole-System Vision

These three initiatives sit within Coventry University’s broader Human-Centred AI Strategy, which links research, innovation, education, and skills to drive inclusive prosperity.

By embedding AI into the university’s research priorities Coventry University aims to make AI work for everyone, everywhere.
