Frontline responders who keep the people of Singapore safe on a daily basis have been honing their skills with Coventry University Group.

Two officers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) have graduated from the university’s Master’s degree in Emergency Management which has helped prepare them for a variety of potential disasters or events.

Taught by staff with a diverse array of backgrounds – both academic and practitioner - the course covers a range of topics within the field of emergency preparedness, response, risk mitigation, recovery and resilience. Learners who are new to the field, as well as those currently working in the sector, are provided with the knowledge and skills needed to analyse approaches, identify good practice and facilitate change for the better.

The course uses real-life scenarios such as the Grenfell fire and the Manchester Arena attack to teach learners through practical examples what they need to know.

Daniel Ng, who received a scholarship from Singapore's Ministry of Home Affairs, currently serves as the Senior Assistant Director in SCDF’s Logistics Department where he is responsible for optimising logistical frameworks to support frontline teams. He chose the course to elevate his leadership skills and prepare him for greater responsibilities, which aligned perfectly with his aspirations within SCDF.

The Master’s in Emergency and Disaster Management at Coventry University was an incredibly enriching experience. The programme equipped me with advanced leadership skills. What I valued most was how theoretical concepts were applied to real-world scenarios.

Holding a senior role throughout my studies allowed me to immediately put the theoretical knowledge into practice, which enhanced both my research and our initiatives at SCDF.

I was particularly drawn to Coventry University because of its strong reputation in this field and the opportunity it provided to engage with leading experts and cutting-edge research.

Amelia Justina Lim is a Senior Assistant Director in SCDF’s Emergency Medical services department who was the commander of one of the fire stations in Singapore when she started the course. She received a scholarship from Coventry University and decided it would be beneficial to train from a more academic point of view.

Some of my assignments involved looking at major UK incidents such as the Grenfell Fire or the Manchester arena attack. So, I got to really look in-depth into how those incidents were managed and learned from them, which was really interesting, as well as learning the theory behind the decision-making on the ground which was fascinating.

To anyone thinking about doing this course I would say that while we had to do a lot of independent studying and reading to get a deep understanding, it will make you a far better officer and manager and really help with your career.
