About
Dr. Michael Asinyaka is a Lecturer in Construction Project Management at Coventry University with expertise in sustainable construction, project leadership, and energy retrofit. He is Course Director for the BSc Construction Project Management and Apprenticeship Programmes, providing strategic leadership in programme design, accreditation, and quality assurance.
His teaching covers construction management, leadership, and research methods, and he is committed to student-centred learning, curriculum innovation, and digital technologies that enhance engagement and employability. Internationally, his career spans the UK, Europe, Asia, and Africa, where he has combined academic leadership with consultancy in energy efficiency, retrofit monitoring, and construction management.
Qualifications:
He holds a PhD in Architecture, Design and the Built Environment from Nottingham Trent University, an MSc in Environment and Development from the London School of Economics, and a BSc (Hons) in Land Economy from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. He’s also completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Professional Practice (Distinction) at Coventry University.

Dr. Asinyaka has held academic and consultancy roles across higher education and the built environment. At Coventry University, he has serves as Lecturer, Course Director, Apprenticeship Director, and international flying-faculty tutor in Hong Kong and Singapore. His consultancy experience includes energy audits for UK housing providers, policy-focused work with the World Bank, and property valuation and construction management in Rwanda.
Earlier in his career, he was Assistant Lecturer and Quality Assurance Lead at the University of Rwanda, a Research Associate with the Ghana Energy Commission, and consultant to international development projects, contributing to successful multimillion-dollar funding bids in sustainable energy and construction.
Research
Dr. Asinyaka’s research focuses on sustainability, retrofit economics, insolvencies in construction businesses, and construction history. His PhD examined the benefits of building energy retrofits in the UK, and his work continues to address the economic and policy dimensions of sustainable construction.
He has secured significant funding, including contributions to World Bank and SiDA projects, and has worked with government ministries, housing associations, and international universities. His publications and collaborations highlight the impact of research-led solutions in addressing the challenges of Net Zero, energy efficiency, and resilient construction practices.
External Activities
Dr. Asinyaka is a member of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), ARCOM, and other professional associations, and is working towards Fellowship of Advance HE. He contributes to the academic community as a journal reviewer for leading engineering and management journals and has served as an external examiner and programme reviewer internationally.
