Immigration and Customs

When you land in the UK, be ready for a long wait before it is your turn to speak to the Immigration Officer. There are long queues so that the Immigration staff can ensure that everyone is safe and entering the UK with the correct documentation. The wait may last between 1.5 to 2 hours.

When you get to the front of the queue, the Immigration Officer will ask you for certain documents, so please make sure that these are ready in your hand luggage for inspection. You will not be able to access your email or print out documents at the Immigration desk.

Documents for inspection:

  • CAS
  • Passport
  • Offer letter
  • Qualifications
  • Bank statement used for your visa application
  • Copies of any receipts for funds paid after the receipt of your CAS
  • Health documents, e.g. TB screening
  • Landing card - you will be issued with this document for completion on your flight. You MUST complete this before arriving. If you arrive at the desk without this completed card you will be sent to the back of the queue.

You may be taken in for a further interview, please do not worry – this is standard procedure. As long as you can tell the Immigration Officer clearly what course you are studying and that it is with Coventry University, the process should be smooth.

If the Immigration Officer refuses you entry, you may be removed immediately or given a very short period of temporary admission. If this happens you can telephone the International Student Adviser in the International Office on +44 (0)24 7765 2152.  If they are not available telephone +44 (0)24 7765 7688 or ask the Immigration Officer to email us at

For information about what you can expect if you are asked for a further interview, please read and download the ‘Credibility interview guide'.
