Credibility interviews were introduced by UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) to ascertain that a student’s intentions to study in the UK are genuine.
If you are called to an interview, it does not necessarily mean that there is something wrong with your application, but it is very important that you prepare thoroughly.
Interview process
Interviews are normally carried out online, although some are via telephone or face-to-face at Home Office centres across the UK. The invitation letter will explain where your interview is and will offer an opportunity to change to a different centre if it is closer to your home. You may also be interviewed during your biometric appointment at the visa application centre.
During a credibility interview, a Home Office member of staff will assess whether you meet the English language requirements, and if you are a 'genuine student'. If you are asked to attend such an interview you must do so (unless you have a good reason as to why you cannot), otherwise your application is likely to be refused.
During your credibility interview, you’ll be asked questions to help the UKVI understand the decisions you have made about studying in the UK. These usually focus on the following key areas:
- Your country decision – Why you chose to study in the UK rather than in your home country or another destination.
- Your university decision – Why Coventry University is the right choice for you, including the research you did and what stood out.
- Your course decision – Your understanding of the course, its modules, and why it is the best fit for your interests and goals.
- Your career plans – How this course will support your future ambitions, and how your studies will help you progress after graduation.
- Your finances – How you will fund your tuition fees, living costs, and accommodation, and your understanding of your financial requirements.
These points are intended as guidance, and interviewers may ask additional questions about your background or study plans to better understand your intentions and suitability.
Interview support
Feeling nervous before a credibility interview is completely normal, but with the right preparation you can approach it with confidence. The purpose of the interview is to understand your study plans and confirm that you are a genuine student. It is not designed to catch you out.
Here are some tips to help you feel more confident:
- Stay calm and positive. The interviewer wants to hear your genuine reasons for studying, so just be yourself and answer honestly.
- Take your time. There’s no need to rush your answers. It is absolutely fine to pause briefly to gather your thoughts.
- Speak clearly and confidently. Show that you can express yourself in a clear, calm and confident way.
- Focus on your own story. Talk about your research, your plans, and why this course and university are right for you.
- Don’t worry if you need clarification. If you’re unsure what the interviewer means, you can politely ask them to repeat, rephrase or explain.
