Turning passion into practice

I have always been driven to understand human behaviours, how the human mind works, and how this understanding can help to improve myself and others. I chose to pursue Applied Psychology MSc for its real-world application in a range of areas, such as counselling, clinical, developmental, political and organisational work. It’s exactly the hands-on approach that I was looking for to strengthen my professional skills and advance my professional career.

BSc to MSc

Choosing to stay at Coventry University was an easy decision after completing my Bachelor’s degree with them.

I did this through an affiliated institute in Sri Lanka, which exposed me to their strong academic reputation, quality education, and genuinely supportive lecturers. That positive undergraduate experience cemented my decision to continue my academic journey with Coventry University.

My favourite study experience

The highlight of my studies has been the counselling role play in my first master’s module, where practical activities and immediate lecturer feedback helped me strengthen my skills in a rewarding way. Sharing this experience with peers from diverse cultures made the learning environment even more meaningful, turning each lecture into a space for connection and shared insight.

Living away from home

Living away from home for the first time in a new country has been a master class in independence, and it’s where my real growth began. Moving from Sri Lanka to England pushed me to step out of my comfort zone, manage my whole life, and truly discover who I am away from home. Through this journey, I haven’t just grown as a student but as a person and as a professional. Whether it’s advocating for my peers as a Course Representative or representing the university as a Student Ambassador, I have gained a lot of confidence in myself and my abilities.

Memorable experience in Coventry City

Coventry is incredibly welcoming to international students, made even better by the welcoming events held by the university. In my first month in the city, I took part in the safety walk organised by the university and Coventry City Council. This event introduced me to the city’s best hangout spots for students, which was a very fun, interactive, and welcoming experience, with amazing food and games.

Since then, I have fallen in love with the local atmosphere, especially during Christmas. One of the highlights was the Coventry Christmas Market. Walking through the beautiful decorations, eating amazing food, and warming up with the best hot chocolate with friends is a memory that I will keep forever.

My favourite spot at uni

My favourite spot is the Richard Crossman Building. It’s where the majority of my lectures take place, and where we host movie nights once every block. These events are the perfect way to unwind and build a real sense of community with peers. It’s in these moments, surrounded by friends who have become like family, that I realise how far I’ve come.

Studying here has been the ultimate journey of self-discovery. Coventry has helped me grow in ways that I didn’t expect, giving me the confidence to excel in my professional career and the independence to thrive in my personal life.
