Introduction
Healthcare careers can follow many different pathways. Some graduates lead hospital teams, others work on national policies, and some create solutions that transform lives in communities around the world.
At Coventry University, our Global Healthcare Management MSc course is designed to help turn your passion into something that genuinely makes a difference in the real world. One graduate who has done exactly that is Dr Aisha Abdullahi Mahmoud.
Why choose global healthcare management?
Health challenges today are closely linked to social inequality, access to care and growing pressure on health systems worldwide. In England alone, the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan warns that without strategic action, the health service could face a shortfall of between 260,000 and 360,000 staff by 2036/37. At the same time, demand for care is rising, with the population aged 85 and over expected to grow by around 55% by 2037, increasing the need for complex, long-term and community-based care.
Alongside these workforce pressures, national policy is changing how healthcare is delivered. The NHS 10 Year Health Plan sets out three big shifts: moving care from hospital to community, from analogue to digital, and from treating sickness to preventing illness. Delivering these changes requires skilled healthcare managers who can lead operational improvement, manage services, and support cultural and organisational transformation across health systems.
Studying global healthcare management helps you understand how health systems work in different contexts and equips you with the leadership, analytical and strategic skills needed to respond to these challenges. It prepares you for a career that goes beyond traditional clinical roles, combining purpose with long-term professional growth and the ability to make a meaningful impact at the local, national or global level.

Aisha’s story to become a global health advocate
Before studying with us, Dr Aisha Abdullahi Mahmoud worked as a dentist with a growing interest in public health and health inequalities. She wanted to understand not just how to treat patients, but how to improve health across whole communities and healthcare systems. This all led her to the Global Healthcare Management MSc at Coventry University.
During her studies, Aisha researched women’s health inequalities in Northern Nigeria, exploring how cultural barriers, limited access to care and low awareness affect oral and maternal health outcomes. Through the course, she developed skills in health systems analysis, leadership, research and design for community-based health interventions. The biggest takeaway was that she gained the confidence to turn ideas into action.
Turning studies into a real impact
After graduating, Aisha founded OraLife, a non-profit company dedicated to improving oral health for women and children. It works across four key areas: oral health education, integrating oral health into maternal care, community engagement and advocating for culturally appropriate healthcare. It aims to tackle the gaps Aisha saw first-hand, where awareness is low and cultural context is often overlooked.
She is also working on a miswak-oriented toothbrush – a hybrid oral hygiene tool that improves cleaning whilst still respecting cultural traditions. The idea is to help communities adopt healthier habits without losing their cultural identity.
Creating change at any scale
Aisha’s journey shows how the Global Healthcare Management MSc can help you build a meaningful career. Not everyone will start a non-profit or create a new health product, but many go on to lead services, influence policy, improve access to care, or shape how healthcare is delivered. The course combines practical skills with theory, giving you the confidence to make a difference in health systems and communities around the world.
