Introduction

Hannah is a graduate of the Finance and Investment BSc (Hons) course and is currently a Senior Financial Planner for Paradigm Norton. We caught up with Hannah to hear about why she chose this career and how Coventry University supported her in this journey.

Did you always know you wanted to go into financial planning and wealth management?

Not at all! I actually wanted to become a doctor growing up. I studied maths, biology and chemistry in sixth form. During my gap year, I spoke to my stepdad, who’s a financial planner, and realised I could see myself in that role. I’ve always wanted to help people, and financial planning lets me do that in a different but equally meaningful way.

What attracted you to this area professionally and personally?

I love that financial planning combines technical knowledge with human interaction. You build long-term relationships with clients, help them achieve life goals and take the worry out of money. It’s rewarding to know you’re making a real difference in someone’s life.

How did your experience at Coventry University shape your journey?

Coventry gave me a head start. I graduated with the CISI Level 4 Investment Advice Diploma, which helped me secure a paraplanner role straight away. I’ve since achieved my Level 6 Advanced Financial Planning qualification. The modules were practical and relevant, especially the Soft Skills module where we gave weekly presentations. It boosted my confidence and communication skills, which I now use daily.

Any standout moments from your time at Coventry?

Attending CISI Financial Planning conferences was a highlight. Hearing from industry professionals and networking confirmed my passion for the field. They were especially motivating during intense study periods.

What skills did you develop during your studies?

I developed skills in investment, taxation, financial planning, behavioural finance, pensions, portfolio management, leadership, time management, resilience and even British Sign Language and Spanish through optional modules.

Any myths about financial planning you’d like to bust?

People often think it’s just about numbers, but it’s so much more. Emotional intelligence, communication and empathy are just as important as technical knowledge.

What’s next for you?

I’ve just been signed off as a certified adviser and started managing my own clients. I’m planning to take the CII Long Term Care and Securities Advice exams this year, and I hope to pursue the CISI CFP qualification in 2026.
