Introduction

After graduating from the Music and Audio Production BSc (Hons) (formerly music composition and professional practice) at Coventry University in 2004, David Hamill has built a career that has taken him from studio work in London to filming in some of the most remote locations in the world. Working across music composition and sound recording, his journey shows how creative and technical skills can lead to a wide range of opportunities in the global media industry.

Looking back, David sees his time at Coventry University as an important starting point.

“My time at university played a big part in shaping the direction of my career.”

Finding direction through study

At university, David developed both his creative voice and his technical ability. The course allowed him to explore composition while also building practical skills in recording and production, something that would later shape his career.

He also credits the support of his lecturers as having a lasting impact on his development.

“In particular, lecturers Rob Ramskill, Adrian Palka and Frank Moon had a real impact on my development, and I still appreciate their support to this day.”

After graduating, David chose to specialise further, studying composition for film and television at postgraduate level.

“I went on to gain a distinction at Bristol University on the MA Composition of Music for Film and TV course.”

This step helped him refine his focus and prepare for work in the media industry.

Taking the first steps into the industry

David’s entry into the industry came through the BBC, where he gained hands-on experience in sound.

“I then underwent a traineeship via the BBC and trained in sound for a year before embarking on a successful career in TV.”

This experience gave him a practical understanding of how production works, as well as the confidence to begin building a career in a competitive field.

Building a career in music and sound

David began working as a composer, collaborating with production companies in London.

“As a composer, I was proficient in writing for adverts and worked with some of the best production companies in London.”

His work included music for cinema campaigns and opportunities to pitch to leading directors, as well as orchestration work for award-winning composer Dan Jones. Over time, he built a varied portfolio.

Alongside this, he expanded into sound recording, drawing on both his university training and BBC experience. This combination of skills allowed him to work across different areas of the industry and take on a wider range of projects.

Working around the world

David has spent much of his career working on factual and documentary television, often in challenging environments. His work has taken him far beyond the studio to locations where adaptability and teamwork are essential.

“I have been active in the drama documentaries, observational documentaries and documentary TV shows for almost 16 years now.”

He has worked on Discovery’s flagship series Gold Rush in the Yukon, recorded sound during the Arctic winter in Svalbard for the BBC and spent time filming in Norway on Endurance: Race to the Pole with Ben Fogle.

These experiences highlight the global nature of careers in media and the opportunities available to those willing to explore different paths.

A career shaped by creativity and confidence

David’s journey shows how combining creative and technical skills can open a range of possibilities. His ability to move between composition and sound recording has allowed him to adapt, take on new challenges and build a long-term career in the industry.

For him, the foundations of that journey began at university, developing not just technical ability, but also the confidence to take opportunities when they arise.

“It was at Coventry University that I developed the skills and confidence that set me on the path to my career.”

Looking ahead

For students considering a degree in music or the creative industries, David’s experience offers a clear message: there is no single path. The skills you develop, whether creative, technical or collaborative, can lead to opportunities in areas you might not expect, both in the UK and internationally.
