Introduction
Mohamed Bseikri’s Mechanical Engineering degree gave him a strong foundation in systems, modelling and problem solving and opened opportunities to explore how these skills can be applied through artificial intelligence, machine learning and data science.
Now studying Data Science and Computational Intelligence MSc at Coventry University, Mohamed is building on his engineering background while developing new technical skills and exploring the growing connections between engineering, mathematics and AI.
Building on a foundation in mechanical engineering
Mohamed's interest in data science and artificial intelligence developed during his undergraduate Mechanical Engineering studies at Coventry University.
Engineering introduced him to complex systems, modelling and analytical problem solving. As his studies progressed, Mohamed became increasingly interested in how computational methods could complement these skills and be used to tackle real-world problems in areas such as automation, computer vision and intelligent systems.
For Mohamed, postgraduate study was an opportunity to build on that foundation.
“I chose Data Science and Computational Intelligence at Coventry University because I wanted to build on my engineering background and move further into artificial intelligence, machine learning and data-driven problem solving.”
Having already developed academically and personally at Coventry, continuing here for his MSc felt like a natural progression.
“I felt confident that the course would give me the technical skills and practical experience needed for my future career.”
Exploring the connections between data, AI and engineering
Mohamed's experience demonstrates how knowledge and skills from different subject areas can complement each other.
Mechanical engineering developed his interest in systems, modelling and problem solving, while his MSc is allowing him to explore how computational approaches, data and artificial intelligence can be used to address complex challenges.
Mathematical and analytical thinking also underpin many of the areas Mohamed is exploring through his postgraduate studies, including machine learning, deep learning and data analysis.
One of the things he enjoys most is connecting this theory with practical application.
“I like learning about advanced topics such as machine learning, deep learning, data analysis and artificial intelligence, but I especially enjoy applying these ideas to real problems.”
The course has also challenged Mohamed to think critically, work independently and develop his approach to solving complex technical problems.
Working through those challenges has helped him become more resilient and confident, while strengthening his research, planning and communication skills.
Taking engineering and technology beyond the classroom
Mohamed's development at Coventry University has extended beyond his course.
One of his most memorable opportunities was taking part in a two-week overseas programme at Shanghai University of Engineering Science.
The programme gave him an opportunity to learn in a different academic and cultural environment, meet new people and explore how engineering and technology are approached internationally.
“It also helped me understand the importance of international collaboration in engineering, technology and research.”
For Mohamed, spending time in Shanghai contributed to his personal development too, helping him become more open-minded and confident while experiencing another culture.
Developing skills through university life
The connections between different areas of Mohamed's Coventry experience go back to his undergraduate degree.
During his first year of Mechanical Engineering, he joined the Manufacturing Society, where he gained insight into practical engineering processes and collaborated with other students on technical activities.
His involvement helped strengthen his teamwork and problem-solving skills, complementing the technical knowledge he was developing through his degree.
Mohamed has continued to develop broader skills as a Student Ambassador, representing Coventry University at events and helping prospective students learn more about university life.
“This role has helped me improve my communication skills, confidence and ability to support others.”
Together, these experiences have helped Mohamed develop technical, professional and interpersonal skills across different stages of his studies.
Building skills for a future in AI and intelligent systems
Mohamed hasn't completed a formal work placement as part of his MSc, but he has developed practical experience through university projects and independent technical work.
His postgraduate studies are helping him strengthen his programming, analytical thinking and research skills while developing his knowledge of artificial intelligence and machine learning.
He's also developed skills in managing deadlines, working independently and communicating technical ideas clearly.
“The course has prepared me for the world of work by developing both technical and professional skills.”
Mohamed sees his engineering background as an important part of where he wants to go next. His knowledge of systems, modelling and problem solving provides a foundation that he can combine with his growing knowledge of data science and AI.
In the future, he hopes to work in AI, machine learning or data science, developing intelligent systems and applying them to real-world challenges.
Mohamed's advice for future Data Science and Computational Intelligence MSc students
Mohamed recommends developing your programming and maths skills early if you're considering postgraduate study in data science, particularly Python, statistics and ML basics.
He also encourages prospective students to be prepared to learn independently and keep exploring new ideas.
Most importantly, he says not to become discouraged when something feels difficult at first.
“The course is challenging, but consistent practice makes a big difference.”
His experience also shows how skills developed in one subject can create opportunities to explore another. An engineering background, for example, can provide valuable foundations in mathematics, modelling, systems thinking and problem solving that can be applied to areas such as data science, artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Data Science and Computational Intelligence MSc in three words
Asked to describe his MSc experience in just three words, Mohamed chose:
“Challenging, practical and innovative.”
For Mohamed, postgraduate study has been an opportunity to build on the foundations of his Mechanical Engineering degree and explore the connections between engineering, mathematics, data and intelligent technologies.
As he works towards a future career in AI and ML, Mohamed is continuing to build on his engineering foundations while developing the technical and professional skills to take his interests in a new direction.
