Things about creative work

Inspiration rarely arrives on schedule. One of the most important things I’ve learned is to explore and observe everything that sparks your curiosity, even outside your main field. Reading, listening, watching, trying other creative activities that feed your imagination. Even if your main practice is drawing, giving attention to other forms of creativity can ignite new ideas you never expected.

Things about confidence or identity

Constant experimentation is key to building your creative identity. During school, the style I developed over time became recognisable. Friends and teachers would say, “that’s you.” That recognition gave me confidence. When I returned to my portfolio after graduation, I realised my work formed a cohesive whole, and that sense of completeness came from consistent exploration and trust in my own approach.

Things about careers not being linear

Identity creation is closely tied to this. I encountered many setbacks and challenges before completing projects in a way that truly reflected my vision. Some days were full of frustration, others full of fulfilment. Both the highs and lows are part of maintaining motivation in your work. What matters is finding an audience for your ideas, someone to connect with and share your story. So that is what sustains creative drive.

Things about failure, rejection, or change

One of my biggest worries was “Am I enough?” I realised that the problem wasn’t myself, it was my question: “Am I doing enough?” By focusing on producing work that genuinely satisfies me, my anxieties decreased. It’s less about perfection and more about reaching a personal standard of sufficiency that feels fulfilling.

Creativity is rarely linear, predictable, or easy. But by embracing exploration, trusting your identity, persevering through setbacks, and answering your own questions first, you cultivate your own light. It is a source of inspiration, resilience, and authenticity that will guide you through any creative path you choose.
