AI in Research

Get in touch

Coventry University Group is driving the UK’s AI transformation by embedding world-class research expertise into real-world challenges.

Our research centres combine technical excellence with deep sector knowledge, enabling collaborative, human-centred solutions that are ethical, inclusive and designed for lasting impact. From advanced manufacturing and energy systems to healthcare and creative industries, our researchers are applying AI across diverse domains to accelerate adoption, generate benefits and create a more responsible and innovative AI ecosystem nationally and internationally.

Human Centric AI: An Interdisciplinary Network

Our Human Centred AI Interdisciplinary Network unites over 100 researchers and 60 PhD students to address key challenges and opportunities in AI. Focused on real-world impact, it builds on applied, transdisciplinary research and takes a whole-system, whole-society approach to ensure AI is technically advanced, ethically sound and socially inclusive.

For West Midlands businesses and funders, the network provides direct access to research, talent and collaboration. Our work informs teaching and business services, helping partners adopt AI responsibly - whether improving workforce tools, customer experience automation, or decision-making.

Our vision

We are a diverse, agile and dynamic network of experts conducting and sharing research in human-centered AI to create meaningful cultural and societal impact and positive change.

We critique and disrupt thinking and develop inclusive, investigative methods to serve society and individuals.

We believe AI can be a powerful force for good, but only if developed responsibly and with care. That’s why we are committed to openness, collaboration across disciplines, ethical and sustainable practices, and creating opportunities that ensure its benefits reach communities locally and globally.

Our research projects

Coventry Centre for Doctoral Training in AI

The Coventry Centre for Doctoral Training in AI forms a key part of the university’s efforts to strengthen national and international future leaders' capability in artificial intelligence. It brings together PhD researchers across disciplines and within core AI, providing them with robust training in AI methods, data pipelines, ethics, AI infrastructure and tools for research and responsible AI innovation.

With streams in Core AI Discover and Applied AI, students tackle projects across healthcare and life sciences, clean growth, business and defence and creative cultures, aligning their research with regional, national and international priorities for AI and digital transformation.

The Centre encourages interdisciplinary collaboration and ensures AI research is rigorous, relevant and timely. Students in the Centre benefit from structured AI capacity-building programmes, cross-disciplinary supervision and access to advanced facilities, including secure data environments and research reproducibility tools. Annual conferences, AI seminars, access to all Alan Turing opportunities for PGRs and support for application to external enhancing activities as well as industry placements ensure that research stays connected to practical challenges. By cultivating a vibrant AI research community, driven by peer-to-peer learning the Centre is shaping the next generation of AI talent and leadership.
