Dr Sally Pezaro, a researcher in Coventry University’s Centre for Healthcare and Communities, has been shortlisted for Midwife of the Year at the Nursing Times Awards.
Established by the Nursing Times, a leading publication for nursing professions in the UK, these awards celebrate the achievements and contributions of midwives and nurses who have made significant impacts in healthcare.
This nomination recognises Sally’s extensive contributions to midwifery research, particularly in leadership, workforce wellbeing, gender equity and improving perinatal care for underserved groups.
A significant outcome of her research has been the development of new global clinical guidelines for managing pregnancy and childbirth in people with hypermobility conditions. These conditions often present unique challenges during the perinatal period, and Sally’s work has provided healthcare professionals with evidence-based tools to improve outcomes for this patient group.
As a strong advocate for gender-inclusive care in midwifery, Sally has played a leading role in developing guidelines and robust arguments towards ensuring healthcare services are inclusive and equitable for all gender identities. This aligns with her broader commitment to reproductive justice and person-centred care.
Sally’s work has also advanced midwifery leadership globally, having led the largest-ever international study on midwifery leadership across 76 countries. The study's findings, endorsed by the International Confederation of Midwives, are shaping leadership initiatives worldwide.
International recognition for Sally’s contributions has come through collaborations with organisations like the Nursing Now Challenge, Johns Hopkins’ Programme for International Education in Gynaecology and Obstetrics and the Ehlers-Danlos Society, bringing valued improvements to care models worldwide.
It is amazing to be shortlisted for the Nursing Times ‘Midwife of the Year’ award. It’s important that we celebrate the achievements of all midwives and recognise the breadth of what they can offer to society. Ultimately, we are all born, and so striving for excellence in childbearing and midwifery benefits us all.
