Coventry University students help rejuvenate schools in Jordan
Friday 21 September 2012
Fourteen Coventry University students recently took part in a once in a lifetime trip to help improve one of Jordan’s most deprived schools.
The Majid AlSadi Changing Lives Programme involved enterprising students working to rejuvenate the physical, educational and cultural experience for the Jordanian children. The programme has been fully funded by Dr Majid AlSadi, Chairman and CEO of investment company Eastern Holding and one of Coventry University highest achieving alumnus.
During an action packed week, the students who were chosen from a broad range of courses, worked in Makhraba Community school in Jordan’s second city, Irbid. They delivered workshops in art and craft; the promotion of democracy; sports and exercise; and music. In addition to this, the group also improved the general appearance of the school by painting classrooms and enhancing the exterior with fresh imagery.
Dr Majid AlSadi said:
I am a great believer in all aspects of education and in providing life changing opportunities to young people. In a sense we are helping to put a smile on the faces of both children and their parents. We are fostering hope among the students to further their education, and to improve economic conditions and quality of life for the community as a whole.
Following a team building session in Coventry, the students left the UK on 9th September and worked in Jordan until Sunday 16th.
Disaster reconstruction and development student, Venetia Smith said:
This was a fantastic opportunity to make a positive difference to children’s lives and I feel really privileged to have been part of such an important initiative. There are many children across the world that do not have access to education like we do in the UK.
During my time in Jordan I helped to create a safe, creative and inspiring learning environment. I also shared my experiences with the children and showed them that anything is possible - that they can achieve their dreams.
The Majid AlSadi Changing Lives Programme is a partnership between Coventry University, Eastern Holding and Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah’s initiative ’Madrasati’, which aims to improve public schools across Jordan. The students were also lucky enough to meet the Queen, who personally thanked them for their contribution and support.
People like Dr AlSadi are keen to give back to the University and support the next generation of students through philanthropy. This particular project also brings with it the chance to create a profound legacy by improving the lives of the children of Jordan.
