Coventry University has been ranked fourth in the world in the first ever global university rankings for online courses.

MoocLab's World University Rankings by MOOC Performance (WURMP) placed Coventry University ahead of world-renowned institutions including the United States of America’s Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Coventry is the only UK institution in the top ten of the rankings, which cover more 200 universities across the world.

MOOCs, or Massive Open Online Courses, have been growing in popularity. Coventry University established its online company (Coventry University Online) to deliver the university’s distance education ambitions in 2017 and partnered with FutureLearn in the same year to deliver online courses and degrees.

Today, the university offers 15 degree programmes and 75 courses on the FutureLearn platform, placing it in the top two per cent of universities offering MOOCs.

The university’s portfolio of online degrees consists mainly of postgraduate courses across business, health and engineering disciplines. Its first online undergraduate degree - in International Business - was launched this year.

Coventry University’s online degrees are structured in a unique way: the first two weeks of every module is available on an entirely open basis, free of charge, and able to be studied anywhere in the world. To date, the university has had nearly 200,000 students study across hundreds of its open courses.

We are hugely proud to have been ranked fourth in the first ever World University Rankings based on MOOC performance. Having only been in the market for two years, we have outperformed many other well-established brands both within the UK and internationally, and this is testament to the hard work of our colleagues across the business and broader university. We are still in our infancy, but we will grow our proposition significantly, leading the transformation of the global online education market.

Prof. John Latham CBE, Coventry University Vice-Chancellor
