Inclusive Immersive is about breaking down barriers to creative technology
Thursday 28 May 2026
Coventry University is continuing to help young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) to explore digital arts, immersive storytelling and pathways into the creative industries through an extension of its pioneering Inclusive Immersive project.
Building on the success of a 2024 pilot, Inclusive Immersive 2.0 allows participants to develop skills and confidence by exploring areas such as game design, interactive storytelling, music and movement in games, character creation, pixel art and 3D world-building.
Inclusive Immersive is about breaking down barriers to creative technology and providing opportunities in a way that is accessible, engaging and led by young people. By bringing together schools and communities across Coventry we are creating space for young people to explore their creativity and see a place for themselves in the future of the creative industries.
Lisa Wilson, Innovation Manager at Coventry University
Funded by Arts Council England, the new phase of the programme is being delivered in partnership with Open Theatre and Farrer Consulting, and will run throughout the summer, engaging students through accessible and creative workshops. New elements include after-school clubs, summer schools and pop-up events across the city, creating more flexible and accessible ways for young people to take part.
We’re really building on that sense of community, opening up clearer pathways across schools, colleges, higher education and into employment. It’s moving beyond one-off workshops or short programmes towards an ongoing infrastructure and community in Coventry for people with SEND who want to engage with creative technology.
Rachel Farrer, Managing Director at Farrer Consulting
For many of the young people involved they are discovering new skills with the digital world and perhaps more importantly how to develop these skills within a collaborative process, learning from each other as well as from the practitioners involved.
One of our key values is ‘agency’ – the importance of every young person having a say in their learning, the way they learn and what they want to learn, in order for them to learn effectively. This project will totally fulfil this ambition.
Richard Hayhow, Director of Open Theatre
We are pleased to be investing almost £50,000 in Coventry University’s Inclusive Immersive 2.0 through National Lottery Project Grants, following on from their initial Arts Council funded pilot of the project in 2024.
Inclusive Immersive has proven itself to be an impactful partnership between Coventry University, Open Theatre and Farrer Consulting, exploring how digital tools can make immersive art more accessible and providing valuable opportunities for young people across Coventry and beyond to develop digital art skills.
Liz Johnson, Midlands Area Director at Arts Council England
Inclusive Immersive 2.0 will work closely with local education partners including Sherbourne Fields School, Hereward College and Riverbank Academy, and culminate in school-based exhibitions and a public showcase. This will celebrate the creative work developed by participants and offer families, communities and industry audiences the opportunity to engage with the outcomes.
