Writers, activists and scientists spoke on women’s rights and their place in the world of science as a popular festival came to Coventry University Wrocław.
Feminatywa 2023 – a feminist festival organised by the Municipal Public Library in the Polish city - welcomed women from different backgrounds to a number of panel discussions and events throughout November, including two at Coventry University Wrocław.
The first was titled Women of science: Glass ceiling or endless possibilities? About women scientists in a male-dominated environment, with Dr Alison Halford, an Assistant Professor and Impact Lead at Coventry University’s Research Centre for Computational Science and Mathematical Modeling (CSM), among the panelists.
Her research emphasises giving a voice to those excluded from public involvement and positions of power, and also examining the extent to which artificial intelligence designs and practices may reproduce or challenge systems of oppression, discrimination and structural inequality.
The panelists talked about the situation of women in the world of science and shared their experiences and observations.
Being part of this event reinforced my belief that creating platforms that amplify the voices of women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and new technologies will drive ambition, inspire innovation, and foster a more inclusive and diverse scientific community. My hope is that through these essential dialogues, we will see the emergence of more allyships within the sector focused on meaningful sustainable actions, ultimately paving the way for a more equitable future for all.

A second panel - titled Towards profound change: Women for Climate on Redefining the Relationship between Human and Nature - was led by Dr Joanna Kubicka, a lecturer at Coventry University Wrocław and expert in the field of sustainable development.
